Difference between regular and quick rating

IIRC (so someone check me on it) anything below game in 30 is quick, and 30 to 60 count towards both regular and quick ratings. Anything above game in 60 is just regular.

Between 30 and 60 minutes. You mean a faster game, right?

By 30 and 60, do you mean by the number of moves?

Hahaha. So you're totally new to chess? That's ok happy.png

It means number of minutes.

? They never ask for how long the game takes. Also, we never use clocks unless we take too long.

Then those games shouldn't be USCF rated, but maybe some tournament directer at your school does that? I dunno.

mariners234

Sounds like what they do at scholastic tournaments where only kids who are beginners play.

mariners234

Are you sure it's USCF rated?

Sometimes people will use a different rating system because it's free.

mariners234

Oh, ok.

And maybe USCF lets them rate it however they want... but I thought under G/30 was quick, G/30 to G/60 is both, and over G/60 is only regular.

G/30 means both players start the game with 30 minutes on their clock, and if a player runs out of time then they lose.

G/60 same thing but both players have 60 minutes.

And for example you might see time controls like this: 40/2, SD/30

And that means each player gets 2 hours to make their first 40 moves. After move 40 they get an extra 30 minutes automatically. SD stands for sudden death.

I don't get it really. My quick rating is 7 higher than my regular. I saw that at people's page, their quick rating increased, but not regular, and sometimes, the other way.

The tournament description said G/30 d5 for time control. It is supposed to mean that if you want to use a clock then....

Haha, well ok, but I've never been to a tournament where clocks were optional.

In my first tournament I didn't have a clock, and neither did my opponent, so the tournament director got us one.

The only time I've ever seen no clock unless you're taking too long is in kid tournaments.

I guess they have to advertise it as G/30 d5 to be able to rate it but I wonder if you reported the TD if they wouldn't get in trouble tongue.png

mariners234

Yeah, I don't even live in CA and I knew they had weekly G/30 tournament in the Bay Area (or at least that's what I'd heard).

I didn't know that if you're under 1400 clocks were optional though.

mariners234

Because some tournaments only affect one rating or the other.

It would be very strange of they were the same... I guess it would mean the player has only ever played in dual rated tournaments.

mariners234

You can tell by looking at your USCF history which tournaments have changed one rating or the other.

KineticPawn

Blitz, Quick and Regular USCF ratings have some overlap time controls. These overlapping time controls are considered dual rated and effects both times controls.

Blitz time controls
G/5 (or G/3+2) to G/10+0.

Quick time controls
G/10+0 through G/60+5.

Regular time controls
G/25+5 or slower.

So G/10+0 is dual rated for Blitz and Quick.  Time controls from G/25+5 to G/60+5 is dual rated for Quick and Regular.

mariners234

Haha, well, it's normal for them to be different. Most people don't play in G/30 tournaments because that's a really fast time control for a tournament.

But ok, the people you searched are probably from the same tournaments you've been going to.

If all your games were dual rated, then I think the ratings should be the same. The only things I can think of is if the K factor is different for different rating categories, or if a TD reported a tournament incorrectly.

mariners234

Next tournament you go to, just ask the TD to look at your rating history and explain it to you.

mariners234

Well... one tournament isn't going to suddenly make them the same, but yeah, asking the TD is probably good.
