I suggest : opponent's minimum rating -100Smile, maximum +400Smile

It's more like universal if you want good simple setting.

If you want to increase your winning percentage, min -400, max +100

If you want tough game, min -50, max +200

If you want to be thrashed every single game, min -10, max 2900

These are just to throw you few ideas about setting. Try experimenting.

I just figured the programmers spent more time than I did thinking about what the ideal default settings should be and I thus defer to their authority on the matter. One less thing to think about.

I think everyone should only play people higher than them - so that they can learn best.

Seriously though, it is good to play higher rated players. Not always possible of course, in which case a game is better than no game.

It may be easier if you knew the percentages so I'll give them here... and of course that's all that ratings are in the first place... they give the expected score of one rating when playing another rating.

200 points is reasonable, if you're the lower rated one you should win about 1 out of every 4 games (or draw two games and lose two games).  400 points is unreasonable IMO because when you lose, you'll lose so badly you won't know why or when you went wrong.

50 points -- 57%
100 points -- 64%
150 -------  70%
200 ------- 76%
250 ------- 81%
300 ------- 85%
350 ------- 89%
400 ------- 92%
450 ------- 94%
500 ------- 96%
