I look at it as a learning experience. For example, I do very well with the Caro-Kann Defense and understand it well. But I want to enjoy more variety so I started looking at the Sicilian Defense. I went 1 win, 1 loss with the Sicilian Dragon as Black and the loss taught me I need to memorize lots of variations if I want to play it. I don't have time! So I researched and found that the Sicilian Kan (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 a6 then typically 5...Qc7 ) and Sicilian Taimanov (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nc6 then typically 5...a6, 6...Qc7) lead to playable positions that can be achieved without the move order being so critical.
So I played the Taimanov once and lost with it. So what? I learned more about the Sicilian and will enjoy playing it more often - hopefully with better results in the future. If not, then maybe the French Defense.
Hmm
