How do you handle losing?

I look at it as a learning experience.  For example, I do very well with the Caro-Kann Defense and understand it well. But I want to enjoy more variety so I started looking at the Sicilian Defense. I went 1 win, 1 loss with the Sicilian Dragon as Black and the loss taught me I need to memorize lots of variations if I want to play it.  I don't have time!  So I researched and found that the Sicilian Kan (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 a6 then typically 5...Qc7 )  and Sicilian Taimanov (1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nc6 then typically 5...a6, 6...Qc7) lead to playable positions that can be achieved without the move order being so critical.

So I played the Taimanov once and lost with it. So what? I learned more about the Sicilian and will enjoy playing it more often - hopefully with better results in the future.  If not, then maybe the French Defense.

I remember nobody want to share the same room with me, because when losing I use to lock the door and analyze over and over again, skipping the dinner. One time my room mate forgot the card and need to beg for more than one hour to let him in. Sometimes, when the analyse shows that I play bad, ends by destroying  everything in my path.

This time it wasn't the case: Nick of TimeNick of Time

Something like 0.6 sec. My opponent even thought that he wins it and says to me: Good game! Ooops

Whenever you lose, do pushups, sit-ups or squats. That would prevent depression.

It’s not a matter of life or death ! ......for goodness sake, its JUST A GAME ! 🤷‍♂️

it may be a game to you, but to me it’s my life.

not really. When I lose, I look at the computer analysis. It usually tells me both where the threat started (if I missed it) and how to best counter it. From there, I try not to make the same mistake in the future.

it is just a game. Dust yourself off and play another to completely forget the loss. Fresh opposition brings fresh optimism and opportunities...

Sometimes, I am totally frustrated, especially after a blunder and I either shift to doing something else pretty quick or start a new game right away. Sometimes if I am feeling patient I will analyze what happened to learn from it. There are also occasions when the opponent is so chill and the checkmate so elegant or novel that I actually celebrate their victory - that is the most fun way to lose happy.png

If I'm about to lose my life that would bother me. If I'm about to lose a game of chess not so much.

Ok this literally made me laugh out loud. 😊

I have this problem where I can't stop playing with a loss.  I have to play again.  It's like gambling addiction where people keep trying to win back the money they lost and dig further and further into a hole.

Kind of unnecessary, don't you think?

I don't think like that.

So people NEED to know that you haven't lost a game yet?

Naw, that’s me vs. Little Jimmy, Washington D.C., 1997. We would play many games from that point on. Unfortunately, he learned to undermine that tactic, and never fell to it after his GIF-able blunder. However, I won several games with a more advanced tactic in my older years: the right cross.
