In blitz, I have a friend who plays his Queen out early and then moves it back again, with no good chess reason. He says that his opponents waste time analysing his moves, which make no sense.

He likes to play passively until the opponent over extends and generates weaknesses in their position, which he then exploits to win the game. It’s very successful for him.

For myself, I play moves OTB with confidence, even if I don’t feel confident. If an opponent falls into a trap, I sometimes make my move immediately, it’s more unsettling. In friendly games though, I don’t play such mind games.

This is a gradual method, which takes weeks or months to reach its full effect... but psychologically very powerful.

Have your opponent come over regularly to play at your house. This is important, so that you can control the circumstances surrounding the game.

Have a table-and-chairs set aside for your chess games, with the board already set up before your opponent arrives. Make sure that you ALWAYS get one chair, and your opponent ALWAYS gets a specific chair.

And now the crux: each time, before your opponent arrives, saw 1/2 a centimeter off the legs of your opponent's chair! Over the course of weeks, you will gradually seem to grow higher and higher in his sight, while he in turn sinks down into the ground.

After a few weeks, the cumulative psychological impact becomes crushing.

Take a look at this video. Would you be able to play such an opponent?
