I mean you can play for traps, but that Nbd7 trap is so notorious that you're hardly ever going to get anyone to fall for it. Also that trap didn't make your position that bad. It's still well into theory. QGD is solid so from move 8, the plan is c6 O-O Re8 Nf8. In any case, it's no reason to stop playing for traps, but you can't blame the loss on move 5

LOL "reputation of not being insanely good". They are a really good team (your opponent was 1700+). Also Ng4???? (it deserves 4 question marks) just hangs the d5 pawn which he could've taken immediately. You're just dead lost after Nf4. GG. Not sure what trap you're talking about... but in general you shouldn't set traps that completely destroy your position...
