Hey guys, can you find any instance where promoting to only a bishop is beneficial, that is, promoting to a bishop is significantly better than promoting to a knight, queen or a rook?

thanks. If you find a position ,please post it. will get trophy of choice

Since you never offered me a trophy of choice, I gave you a trophy instead: a position on my blocked list.

You've got a point.

When you've got a king, knight and pawn against a king, and you need some practice at finishing off a king with just a king, bishop and knight.

What's my choice of trophies?

Avatar of SaintMark

Opportunity to practice finishing off a king with just King, bishop and knight!

Sorry for the delay, chess.com make it harder to find messages in the forum these days.

EndgameStudy deserves a trophy, a brilliant study!

Can someone explain to me how EndgameStudy's example is any good?

In what conceivable way is promoting to a bishop there better than promoting to a queen?

g8=Q and then Qb2# would faster.

The only time where it's better to underpromote is when the promotion to a queen would result in a immediate stalemate.

@Irespectdat

Call me stupid, but how is it a stalemate when black can still move pawns?

You said it yourself.

Where can black move them? They are blocked by themselves and the king.

My bad. I was confusing the sides.

I am a beginner and this happens sometimes.

In that case EndGameStudy's example is indeed very good.

No biggie. I'm a beginner too.

If g8=Q?? it is stalemate grillzange!

Avatar of Joseph_Norman

This isn't to do with the forum topic, but a nice position all the same(my creation)

Avatar of Grillzange

Yes yes, it's a stalemate. I just looked it very wrong.

My trophy choice..umm any I don't care

Avatar of SaintMark

I want a big gold one ideally, but I'll settle for anything.

Here's another example:

White: Rook H8, Pawn G7, Pawn A6, King H1

Black: King A8, Bishop B8, Pawn A7

G8=Bishop=Mate in 2.  (Promoing to knight also wins, but bishop= faster
