I once asked Peter Svidler if he reads any chess books , he basically state, that he read lots of books when he was young and it was enough.

I'm sure players like Anand and others top caliber , probably just need computers and not books or maybe somee informators (magazines).

So what rating range do you think players stop reading books?

About three decades ago, I made a habit of asking players about their reading interests. For players about 1800 and above, the answer was usually to only express interest in Informants.

So this is a rough estimate for people who have no idea at all, how long does it take to become each of the following. (Of course it may vary depends on many factors including age, memory capacity, genetics etc).

Expert - ~2000 [ 4,5 years]

CM OR NM - 2200 [ 7 years ]

FM - 2300 [ 9 years ]

IM -2400 [ 12, 13 years ]

GM - 2500 [ 15, 20 years ]

Time line is if you starting chess from scratch and work your hardest to grow as fast as you can.

Oh okay, sorry

RoobieRoo

No mention of Retis two great books, the original "my predecessors"? "Modern ideas in chess" and "Masters of the chessboard"? Shame on this thread.  Best two chess books you will ever read and not a word ghost written either.
