Getting destroyed in rapid games, don’t know what to do

I was improving and then suddenly hit a wall and now I’ve lost my ability. All these books and videos and puzzles and self analysis and I just can’t see what I’m doing wrong exactly. I feel like every game now I’m just playing until the opponent beats me and it sucks, I can’t calculate anymore and feel like I’m just moving at random with no clear direction. I haven’t been playing much so I won’t cite fatigue but how do I get back on track?

Stop playing chess for a little while and come back when you are fresher in a few days

You can not lose if you do not play.

You lost 5 games out of your last 9. Doesn't seem like that bad score from someone who says he hasn't played much lately. Keep playing, and go through every game you play afterwards. Try to see where you did wrong. If you do this, you won't make the same mistakes as often. Then repeat. And keep playing. Only way to get better is to keep on truckin'.

Yeah, I either like to take a break for a day or two, or solve some puzzles (from a book).

Puzzles have no pressure of the clock, or winning/losing. You just try to do good analysis.

If you can't make any good calculations during the puzzle solving, then probably don't play that day, because your brain isn't cooperating wink.png

Try changing your opening for few days (use 1.e4 see some Italian games - 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4). Before every move see whether all your peices are protected (particularly before clicking confirm button). Also don't move your queen before casting.

I also have the same problem. The thing is, why don’t masters who do chess 7 hours a day have the same problems? I don’t get it.

What books do you read? Study books appropriate for your level. And when you study a book, make sure you played all the games in that book. Solve easy problems for pattern recognition. Solve harder problems for calculation training. Try as hard as you can at finding the answer.

The system here is designed so that your rating increases until you hit a wall.  Even if you were always perfectly rated you would win half and lose half.  If you do a quick probability calculation over say 200 games you will by random chance along have long runs where you lose say 2/3rds of your games on average would have about 50/50 chance of a run of 8 straight loses.  But worse you aren't always perfectly rated.  Sometimes you will be somewhat overrated and then the odds of a long run increase, another game or two.

It sucks and it is discouraging.  But that's what flipping a coin and be emotionally invested in heads is like.
