Why should you expect your grade to go down just because you get older? If a person continues to work seriously on their chess, they should be able to improve no matter what their age.
Think about it. Older (or younger!) players whose ratings go down do so because they aren't working hard enough on improving their game.
The age thing in chess is WAY overblown.

Englands version of USCF in America.

Apparently the conversion is ECF *8 + 650 = FIDE.
Or maybe 150 is his FIDE rating.
150 New ECF= 130 Old ECF. So the improvement isnt as much as it looks at first sight, but still good so well done.
I think 150 ECF is about 1800 ELO.

if I can go on improving until my 80's i would be very happy but somehow doubt that will happen.The only 80 year old player in our local club used to 190 but is now

I have been studying Bobby Fscher and playing alot of 1 minute games on the net so that may account for most of it. The 1 minute games sure sharpens up my thinking and watching the top graded players,I find, really good fun.
As you get older your acuity decreases, but your judgment increases. You are probably at the peak of your OTB play. The decline will be very gradual. The chess clock and fatigue will start to be a factor.
My grandpa was 96 when he died and at 95 he was still kicking my toosh in chess.....I dont think chess grades or ranking go down with age.... if you keep working on your tactics....you learn something every day...right?

Proven not to be the case in competitive chess, but there's no reason most people can't keep improving, just depends if your mental/physical decline is a greater factor than what you have left to learn or not.
Annabella you look gorgeous. Why are women chess players hot but guy's not?
But I digress.. There are still lots of top players stricken in years but the World champion is always below 50, in recent years at least.
The fatigue factor mentioned is probably the biggest drawback but also the 'wanting/needing' to win lessens with time I guess.
I expect to reach a level in chess when my opponents become just 'hard work'. Playing on the higher boards against better players has produced many interesting games but it has been hard work, this last season.Even so i'm looking forward to the start of the next season (September in U.K) and continuing my studies with Bobby Fischer.
Victor Korchnoi was playing GM tournament chess into his 80s (and not doing badly either)

Speak for yourself.
I'm 58 and each year my English grade has steadily improved from 101 about 15 years ago to today 150 (soon to go to around 160 for next season). For someone my age I would expect my grade to be going in the other direction.
At what age would you expect to start seeing a decline in your game?
