"gg"

Win or lose, I always type "gg" afterwards. Very, very few people respond.
This is chess. I wish it was more polite, but it's not.
Does anyone else ever type, "gg" afterwards?

Projectus

When an opponent does respond on occasion, it usually leads to a couple friendly exchanges. But it seems like many players do not want to engage, if only briefly. Then there is always the player who types taunting insults during the game. I just don't understand.

gg stands for 'good game'. I think a player would like if he play a really good game. Maybe the game was interesting, a tough game or long (in moves) or doubble edge game. but sometimes the game was horrible (from  who lost), gg can sound offensive!!! I'm a trully troll sometimes, and I know how offende saying 'gg' ou 'thanks for game!' and know how that greeting can be sarcastic! (I'm not perject lol).

Others situations are 'no time to answer by rapidlly play other game', 'no seeing really the chat'.

I like greeting my opponent when it's deserved, I say 'you are a smart guy' ou just 'clever!', etc.. sometimes during the game, sometimes before resign. 'gg' is too trivial mainlly in internet.

gg looks like otb handshakes where we see some players do it by mere convention, often without even looking on the opponent's face. On the internet this 'falsehood' is less tolerated and most do not believe that it is a legitimate act of cordiality.

This is my impression. Obviously i'm not saying all 'gg' are illegitme, but in internet we dont have those 'feeling' look the body expression, voice tone, etc..

That's my perspective, I think many people share my sentiments

Exactly this.

Why do I care if some random 1600 rated player from the other side of the world wants to be my friend? It's not like anything valuable is going to come out of me having a conversation with him. I'm never going to meet him in real life, and I don't expect him to teach me anything. The only thing I expect him to type in chat is bragging about winning / being mad about losing, so there's no point in even talking to him.

Well, after finishing a game, I am onto the next game. I play bullet 99.99% of the time here and people never respond to anything. Well, everybody is here to get a game and nothing else. You get in, play and then get out. Just like a gym. U get in, workout and then get out (without talking to anybody/very little talking).

You 2 should form an exclusive club. A very exclusive club. Shouldn't be difficult.

you should not be so self depreciating.

glamdring27

Typing the same thing after every game renders it meaningless.  Most games people play are not 'good'.  I've said 'gg' or 'good game' (because if a sentiment is worth saying it's worth spelling out rather than putting an acronym that removes most of the thought behind it anyway.  But in live chess I have chat disabled anyway.

It is really a shame when people are lecherous, JustJackinIt.

I usually (%90 percent of the time type "gg". I just think it's being a good sport.

no, I meant self depreciating. look it up. either you consider yourself part of the toxic, lecherous douchebags or you consider yourself part of the 1% which is a bit arrogant.

Self depreciating is an older spelling of self deprecating... They mean the same thing. Also, because I consider myself to be part of the 1% of Internet users who don't say terrible things doesn't make me arrogant, it just means I don't say terrible things to strangers online. I don't get why your panties are in a bunch.

Then why try to correct something when it's right. Hmmmmmm so you're part of this exclusive 1%, yet you have said a stranger online "I don't get why your panties are in a bunch" I don't own any panties much less bunch them together. I just feel you shouldn't be as harsh on yourself.

Apparently both can be used and mean the same thing, but 'deprecate' is far more common.

Edit: I see you have resolved that already. Carry on tongue.png)

I love this response. I used to own panties and wear them although I'm a man, it was very naughty fun happy.png

Some people didn't understand that "deprecate" was a word, used "depreciate" instead, and someone is trying to consider that an alternative?! omegaLUL

What does "gg" mean? Ghastly game? Grisly game? Gorgeous game?

And if it was any of these, the opponent would be aware of this without you having to spell it out. Not?

Basically someone thought I'd made a mistake because they were unfamiliar with a particular phrase.

A good question.

Let me ask you this, do you know what "gg" means? Of course you do, it means good game.

But for a game to be "good" , doesn't it follow that it actually has to be good?

So if you win a game for argument then your opponents play can not have been good or else he would've won or the game would've been a draw? So really in such case, aren't you really saying "gg" to simple rub in the fact you won? (and how many times have you said 'gg' after winning on time?)

Ok, let say you lose. Then from your perspective, really how can such a game be classed as "good"?.....Doubly so if you lose on time in a winning/won position!

The reason you don't see it much if at all is that it is antiquated practice from a bygone era that under a microscope of today's values is at least, pointless and at most a veiled insult to your opponents play.
