Oh man , there is no love nor sportsmanship in 'gg'. It is the classic diplomatic insult coming from people that want to say either ' you got your butt kicked ' or ' obviously you used an engine' but don't have the guts to say it.

They love it when you respond with stuff like 'thanks'

I normally go for:You are a sore losing  sack of &&%$$ when I win and : Oh please ,coming from a &&^%muffin piece of *&&^%$ball like you ! Why don't you go *&^%$ or (**&^%$$## yourself ,)(*&^%%$head.

gg is not an insult only if it is said in sarcastic tone...

The irony...

I type "gg" only sometimes...other times, I'll type "Oh crap" or "oops" or something like that if I really make a bad move, or otherwise overlooked his threat.

But if I play a patzer like myself and happen to win a lot of material forcing him to resign, I won't say anything because I have that feeling, like the forum had already pointed out, that I could be antagonizing him.

Then there's those times when I'll have a convo with my opponent about the game, and then recalling similar mistakes/moves in other games. That in my opinion is the best time for "gg," because you know that he's somewhat civil and won't tear off your head and chet down your neck just for trying to be nice.

I once said "gg" to a guy and he responded, "I will find you and I will hurt you". Liam Neeson fan I think.

StrategicPlay

I don't mind saying 'gg'.

I LOVE saying 'gg' (not in the negative way, though).

GG is awesome!

Ban non-'gg'ers!

(lol Tongue Out)

There are 2 possible definitions to "gg"

1) Good game, well played. ~ After all, this is just a courtesy you would extend to any player after a game IRL. Why should interenet opponents be any different?

2) HA,HA! YOU LOST! YOU ARE THE STUPIDEST THING THAT EVER TOUCHED A CHESS PIECE! YOU SUCK!

Of course, the difference between #1 and #2 lies solely in the mind of the listener. It is the ultimate Maturity Litmus Test, separating the adults from everybody else.

"gg" -- when i think that this game was better than the 10 other games i played, and both sides played well(second statement mandatory).

"gg" -- when i play a high intensity match, which includes manouvering and strategical play and both sides played well.

"u played well, i was an ..." -- when he says gg and i m frustrated at myself.

"yeah" -- when he says gg and i dont think the match deserves it.

Raven_Stock

Though i was most ecstatic when i won a 30+ moves blindfold match.

me-- gg,that was blindfold

him--

me-- i m on the seventh cloud

him--

me-- u must be atleast a little bit impressed

Now I know it is either some kind of etiquette or the sincere expression of satisfaction for the game, like a shortened "you lost, but you played well, and I'd like to play you again since I think we are at a similar skill level", or "I lost, but I enjoyed the level of struggle, so I'd like to play you again since I think we are at a similar skill level".

Well said, that is exactly what I understand "gg" to mean.

i disable chat unless im playing someone from my friends list, and then i feel that honesty is the best policy i only say "gg!" win or lose if it really was a good game (full of intresting positions and bold play), or if they beat me heads up i say "nice win" or if i play like i recently had a lobotomy i usually say "dude you suck at suicide chess you have got a lot to learn if you want to beat me!"

But mostly i just disable chat because there is a lot of 12 year olds with bullet wins against me who won on time while down 2 rooks and they say lots of mean and hurtful things before declining my rematch request and the therapy bills just got too expensive

It doesn't matter if it was really a good game, or if your opponent played well.  You say it even if the game was lousy, your opponent played like an idiot, and he only won because you overlooked his only stupid threat in the whole game daydreaming about the Kosintseva sisters instead of paying attention.

So you're in favor of empty gestures.  No thanks.

So you never say, "How are you?" or "Have a good day" to people when you don't sincerely care?

Just walk around sullen and silently, eh?  You're the type the neighbors are always shocked to learn had bodies in the basement - "He was always the quiet type, kept to himself"

Okay, I get it.

?!

How did you get from that to that?  I'm not in favor of empty gestures at the chessboard or other forms of sport, anyway.  My point was, if everyone is forced to go through the motions, actions mean absolutely nothing.  I actually mean it if I say "gg"/"good game" to someone.

I definitely don't "just walk around silently and sullenly" .. Nice blatant innuendo there though.  As you're willing to speculate on my personal life I will do likewise: you're a horse's ass.

The only thing you can hope for now, is that he won't see this...

I can't decide if I want to explain it in a sarcastic way, or, in an ironic tone.
