I actually agree with you, but not with your example, since the analogy goes only so far.  In tennis, one cannot force a win.  Put me up 5-1 over Federer and I will still lose.  Contrast this with chess.  Give any GM just a king, and give me a king and a rook, and I will win every time.

ilikeflags

not the same game.  often the fat lady sings in chess long before checkmate.  GM's never end in checkmate--rarely at the most.

ilikeflags

i disagree.  i think there comes a time in almost every game when almost every player can say--that's it, i've lost it.

64_block_square

that was just like saying, can you please resign right now?..even yough that polite words was used, it is still rude and wrong..

ilikeflags

unless he actually meant the game is good.

Ok, how about "this" game? Clearly a draw, right? No one will win this debate in this topic and the "win" is not forcible - even if it totally breaks down to a flame war and gets locked.

So, how about it - we extend an offer for draw and both say "GG" to each other?

Writch

GG, no-re.

It's rude and unneccesary.  There is no obligation to resign, or to agree to a draw.  There is no harm in playing it out, and no need to be rude (hopefully the opponent will also use good manners and not abandon or unneccessarily delay the game when he is dead lost).

For example, in several of the "Super-GM" games at the London Classic in December, the GMs played out simple winning and drawn endings so the fans could see why the result was reached.  This was met with widespread approval from fans and commentators.

 Amen.

1 thing though, against higher rated players they usually are more respondent to gg and resign promptly, maybe because they understand that their position is stuffed. But against lower rated players, they might not really understand.

too rude.

It's nice to have a winning position. But instead of a resignation request you should play as strong as possible and try to force a mate. The opponent will resign as soon as he realizes that mate is unavoidable. I've lost "won" games because I was too lazy to convert the advantage into a mating attack. But I also could end games with crushing material edge quickly finding a more or less forced mate.

WaterAlch

I personally often times do NOT say "gg" unless it is rightfully earned by both players.

Getting crushed and having your opponent saying "gg" is not very satisfying.

Likewise, crushing your opponent and saying "gg" seems like salt in the already deep wound.

I played a good high rated player and caught them early in the game with a blunder (pinned Queen/King).  Telling that person that it was a gg clearly wouldnt be the truth, but I did tell them that I hoped they get some better games in the future, and I did mean it. ^_^

Kernicterus

I think we all know that we have the option to resign.  Telling someone "gg" or "prodding" them is obnoxious by any measure.

I've been told by a few high rated players that I resign too early.  I have to force myself to play losing positions...YET...I have a great respect for those who keep playing, unless they take it to an extreme...and even then, I may not respect the choice to run around the board with a lone king, but I respect my opponent's "right" to do so.

What I fail to understand is how so many people don't comprehend the difference between their personal taste and to what they are actually entitled.  Playing out a game, esp. in a rapid manner...is not even close to being as nasty as say patronising someone with "gg" before the game is over.

And LisaV.  You made me laugh.  Maybe he did read it.  I am going to post his game soon - let's hope I don't mess it up or I might actually have to kill myself. lol

It's difficult to get in a long game on live chess. Blitz is more common. When I played internet golf, the play was much slower with 40 minutes against one opponent. There just isn't blitz golf. Anyway, after the match was concluded, each typed the word gg.

gg means more than good game. It also means, thanks for spending your time with me. 40 minutes is a considerable commitment of one's time.

I have a great deal of experience with losing in online chess. Embarassed  If my opponent was a jerk, then I just click resign. If my opponent played well and was not rude about it, then I type gg and then click resign. If my opponent played exceedingly well, then I type vgg and then click resign.
