going for the draw

How do you guys feel about going for a draw.  I was playing this game. (very poorly) I was clear that I was going to lose.  Then at move 19. he gave me a chance to draw.  I took it.  But he took great offense to what in his mind was a cowards way out.
Do others feel this way?
I'm new and that you should go for the draw when you know you can't win.

If he took offense then he should not have taken a move that allowed you to draw! If you get a draw, you get a draw... if it is his mistake, then it is not "A coward's way out", don't worry about other people's opinions of your moves... or about your offers of a draw... :-)

Seems perfectly fine to me; you trapped your opponent even though he had greater material.

This is called "perpetual check", and this position is drawn. Your opponent should have been avoided this kind of position. It is no "cowards way out"... it is a mistake by your opponent. If he is angry, he should be angry with himself, and not with you.

"You cannot win" does not mean "you must lose". "Draw" exists in chess' rules.

It is a part of winning to make sure there is no draw possibility.

obviously he did not make sure there was no draw therefore a draw was the correct outcome.

you should always take a draw if you can if you think you cannot get more.

but remember always to calculate when you are winning that there is no draw. it's hard but nessesary.

When a person plays the Fried Liver attack you should expect them to get angry at the drop of a pin. He was just angry because he didn't win, not because of any flaw of yours.

I managed to force two draws tonight against opponents well above me in ratings, and, frankly, it's more satisfying than a victory, knowing you've pulled the irons out of the fire !
