Going 'off-line' when losing?

Do you find that sometimes when a player is losing they will go off-line? I know you can't prove it but it does seem to happen  a lot if l get the upper hand against a better player.

Maybe he thinks he is having a bad day and needs some rest to come back in the game? Anyways even if he did sign off just to prolong a lost game there would be nothing wrong with that. That's just another way of trying to gain an advantage (because the person he is playing will get frustrated and try to rush things)

I'm a newbie here and wonder what happens if you go off line while playing. I am playing my first online game and I think I'm in a strong position. (My hopes are often dashed.!Smile) However, I'm hungry and want some lunch. What happens if I logout? Is the game saved?

There is nothing wrong with going offline during a game as long as you don't run out of time. Unless you are playing live chess, it is not realistic to expect someone to stay online during a whole game. When you log off, the game is saved and you can go do something else.

Yes. I also find that sometimes when a player is winning they will go off line. And sometimes they even do it when the game is even. You never know what the circumstances are of someone playing. They could be playing on their lunch break, or some other finite time window.

You do get the "bad loser" situations, like recently I was in an endgame K+N v K+B, I fork the opponent's  K and N opening promotion for my pawn on the next move and mate in 2 or 3. We were playing a lot of quick moves up to that point both online he just immediately went offline and vacation. I would suppose curtesy wise he could complete the game. Well eventually he had to return.

In another situation my opponent got out off a very sticky situation and turn the game to his favor. He was thrash talking me , but at that point he really let it lose. Instead of turning the chat off, I just went offline/ ignored him play only a move per maximum time, evaluating each move carefully. It frustrates him and he eventually draw.

I think the thing to remember this is basically correspondence chess and both parties agree to the time limit. I greatly improved my playing when I slowed down and play my games really making use of my time to consider and think every move carefully.

It is very addictive to sit and play these games, so sometimes I just have to go offline else, I wont get supper, walk the dog, go to bed , or to work . The wife allready complain:) Well I have to go now!

There is no etiquette beyound being polite in the chat window and trying to play your moves within the time given. There is nothing wrong with someone getting frustrated after a devastating move is played vs them wanting some time to cool off. It is legit and within the scope of correspondence play.

If waiting is a problem, start a new game or play games with the 1 day time limit.

i see it as.. they go offline and hope for time expiration. -most of my losses have come from my time expiring, usually me winning :(

I sometimes go off-line when I'm losing if I feel it's because I keep making losing moves. I go off-line, maybe sleep on it and then I start analyzing the board from scratch again. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that.

i am learning that it is a good idea to go offline when tired, so i don't make mistakes ... 1/2 my losses were where i blundered a win away or i resigned when it later turned out that i still had good play ... so now i take a break every so often, and i am playing much better.

there is one situation that i wonder at ... sometimes after a break overnight an opponent shows up with a startling non-intuitive line at variance with their rather pedestrian play of the day before.  it makes you wonder ...

I'm okay with going off line as there could be a number of valid reasons for it; what frustrates me is when you have the obvious upper hand in a 5 day's (or more) per move game and they just let the game time out....and there could be valid reasons for this also, but I have seen the same players on line while my game is "left"....

It has happened so many times that I KNOW it's just part of the beta male, sore loser routine.
