Going on vacation with moves pending

When I had to switch to vacation mode in the summer, I received a message that I could not go on vacation status while it was my move in two games games. I made moves in the games and then switched status. I have recently noticed players going on vacation status even though it is their move in a number of games. Has the rule changed?

Some people have a set-up where if they get close to running out of time it will automatically put them on vacation.  Could this have been the case?

IPA-Ray

That was the case but I'm surprised it is allowed. It could give a player in a tight spot additional days to find their next move. This is not what happened in my most recent game as my opponent is a good guy who would not try to sneak around a rule. And the position is not that complex.

It's a feature that automatically applies to premium members - see http://support.chess.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=31.

I don't think you should be able to go on vacation when it's your move whether you're a premium member or not.

I agree with you Eddie.

It actually helped me as my power went out for 8 days during Hurricane Ike and I had no way to get my moves all done in time. I was sure I just lost the games, but found the vacation function saved me.

My membership fees at work!

Not unfair because it is offered to all players equally, and if you decide its not your thing, just make that a condition of challenge in your games.

Good points Paul.

I guess if you are a premium member and set your games to put you in vacation mode when time is about to expire, you can only lose by timeout if you run out of vacation time. I have games where the same opponent is on vacation in one game and live on the other. It doesn't matter to me. I'm just trying to learn how these things work.

I was in the hospital for 11 days and lost all my games on time. In 6 weeks my rating was back to where it was. I don't  think someone should have to wait until vacation time runs out for the opponent to either make a move or lose on tiime.

Trust me, nothing is worse than waiting for your opponent to move, and after 2-3 days of waiting, goes on vacation for another week. Drives me nuts when Im ready to play my move. However, its the same as resign vs. checkmate. Should you or shouldnt you; purely opinion-based but good for a long debate.

online chess is different than live or "real life" chess, the time feature is not the same, it is there to set the pace for the game, and you can lose on time only so you would keep up the pace. losing on time should never occur because there is no pressure and you have at least a day for every move, but it happens, and proves nothing but the fact that you are lazy (unless have a reason of course).

i think it's totaly fair and welcome to rid the timeout factor from games, and timeout protection is perfect for that!

The original question has not been answered. You cannot set vacation on when it is your move. Premium members automatically, without setting anything themselves, invoke timeout protection if they have vacation time.

Click on the link and hold your cursor over "Auto-Timeout Protection" for an explanation.
