Good Chess Software

Hello: I  am just starting to study chess again. Back in the 90s (when I was a teenager) I profited from ChessMaster software for PC. I enjoyed being able to play the computer plus I liked the database of historical games and lessons. The Analysis Feature also helped me. Can anyone recommend similar software that I can download to my laptop to start studying again? DKK

Out of morbid curiosity, I did a forum search for good chess software and came up with 20 pages of previous threads.  Probably only about 10% will prove useful, but that's still a lot.  Have fun!

Oh I like HIARCS Chess and Chess King.  They're relatively easy to use and entertaining.  I've owned Fritz but it's a Chessbase product and powerful, but complex.  Lucas Chess is free but documentation is maybe not stellar.  Have fun choosing just one; I obviously couldn't...wink.png

Arena 3.5.1 is very good, and free, but make sure you do a search for what adjustment you need to make to get the help file to work.

with Arena you can play against the computer and also load and analyze other games.

DarkKnightAttack

I think you can play against Chess.com bots. They are excellent for practicing.

A few of my friends swear by Fritz 17, and they are club players.
