It does not concern me that Mato is not a chess GM. By the evidence of his Youtube success, he is a GM of presentation - his style and consistency in entertaining and educating players at the intermediate level is the best that I have seen. As a result, his impact on the world of chess, in terms of encouraging and delighting new players and of bringing new enthusiasts to the game is arguably greater than most GMs. He should be respected for this.

isn't it interesting that the most popular and best chess educators almost never have made the jump to GM?

silman, heisman,etc?

I wonder if becoming a respected coach and author prevents people from taking their game to the next level?

I imagine it varies for every individual. Aagaard always preferred teaching over playing but still got his GM title. Some IMs might realize they don't have what it takes to play top-level chess and try to pay their bills through other means.

Then on another level also 1600 rated players can be great teachers; their enthusiasm for the game might just be what children and/or other beginners need.
