Great Attacking Players

Hey all first post on the board. I want to know who were/are some great attacking players past/present? Thanks in advance.

TheGreatOogieBoogie

The greatest attackers of all time I'm aware of are Shirov, Topalov, Kasparov, and Nakamura.  Topalov seems especially frightening because he's not just a great attacker but amazing technique.  Sure all GMs have great technique but I mean compared to even other GMs.

Thanks for the responses theres a few new names there for me to check out. Love the way Polgar plays the Ruy!

Tal is probably my favorite attacker. Fischer is right up there. Spassky is sometimes under-estimated as an attacker.

Here Spassky beats the world-class player Larsen with the Black pieces in 17 moves :

... and of course... who could omit Chucky from the list of brilliant attackers? Check out his 18th move in a game against a former World Champion:

Anderssen is considered the draw master.  He usually opens 1.Nf3 going for English or Catalan positions with white and seeks to pacify positions.  I'm not too familiar with Nezhmetdinov, Tolush, Rossolimo, or Velimirovic though but may check out some of their games.

The Anderssen referred to is Adolf Anderssen, not Ulf.  There's a three-part video on Nezhmetdinov on youtube:

There's also a two-part video on Rossolimo:

Tchigorin and Pillsbury were great attackers, too.

Speaking of Topalov, I read an interview with Dvoretsky saying that what held Topalov back in the 90s was poor endgame technique(for that level, of course)! He said he took one training session of 12 days with him and it led to him becoming world #3.

Regarding attackers, Geller was quite good. He gave Fischer a good run in the 60s. I agree that Spassky is underrated. Of course, any world champion is great at attacking. Capablanca could go for a nice king hunt if the position called for it! Kramnik is another very ruthless attacker when he has the initiative.

Another dedicated attacker is Georgian GM Baadur Jobava, one of my favorite players these days.  A very creative, imaginative chessmaster.

You can include also Kolisch to the list of great attackers.

Well, I will say Carlsen is a fearsome player in any position, especially in positions where he has the initiative. In my opinion, though, Carlsen isn't really an attacker. I suppose you're right in saying that he is a great attacking player, and, being a superGM, if someone hands him the chance to create multiple threats against the king, he will surely oblige! However, what he really seems to excel in, above all else, is in crystal clear, simple, positional games and endgames. He's a universal player, undoubtably, but I think the latter sort of games fit his "crocodile" persona moreso than the tactical attacking style of a Kasparov or Tal or Shirov.

richard rapport is great too
