Groups and Teams

How do people decide who to invite.  Randomly in my inbox I receive invites to join so and so's group.  Some I do, some I don't.  In the message my name will be mentioned after a "hi."

So do people actually sift through picking and choosing users and then take the time to e-mail them or is it automated and the invites go to everyone on chess.com.

Thanks in advance.

I wonder this often.

I have to admit, I don't understand the team thing. When I first started playing here I humoured a few of the invites, and went to the team pages, and I never really got what the point is.. I realize I must be missing something.. can you explain?

I actually like team play, at least in theory. When I play a team match, I won't resign as early or play as carelessly because the outcome of my games impact the other players. And it's a potential way to interact with some players with whom you share a common interest.

If you think a group is lacking something, add it. All members can create forums, and photo galleries.

In the match games, are you paired according to ratings?

Yes, members of each team are sorted by rating, and the strongest on each team are paired.

I focus on the game more when it's part of a team match too. I've also noticed that people are less likely to abandon the game when it's part of a team match, so I actually prefer team play.

Well, the "join my team" spammers probably aren't in a hurry to out themselves in this thread even if they have noticed it. I'm sure that chess.com doesn't have an automatic way for them to message everyone automatically, if only because that would be pretty taxing on server resources & annoy everyone. My best guess is that people manually message people they see in member lists of other teams and forum posters, but the few times I've asked how I came to some team's attention, I haven't gotten a good answer.

ok. first as an SA of a team.

you do WANT you team to have more than handful of people,

but then... what more COULD a team offer?

advice-  the world is awash with great advice- us lowly patzers can only parrot it back.

I like to think that in teams you can get a sense of friendship.  but this , too is what you make of it,  efriendships are tricky!

Vote chess is a perk of groups.

Lastly, many teams "aspire" to drum out their best players and win awards.  this is more or less in any team.  for me, I can play (strongly) only SO many online games at once.  and I'm NOT fast either.  (about a 1day average move) so team that participates match after match- can be overwhelming....

----

so I can only say that there's no good solution for people like myself who are trying to build up a group- but to spam.  AND when I invite, I'm kind of hoping you talk on the notes , and be friendly.  better yet contibute a little on the forums!

but most chess players here are caught up with their own things- and if the most you can do is join a group and play a handful of online games, you are at least making some group better and more successful.

here is how i sift thru the 10000s of online players when focusing on strengthening teams im admin in

i tend to themed teams , i wont advertise them here as thats rude of me but

i wil look to certain preference first if the group is themed to a book ie , say im in a team that loves tolkien i miht look for players who have avis that show orcs / elves etc

i tend to not do mass invite ie 30 at once but approach each individually as i believe a personnal touch is best

i would look at a players profile , are they a live chess player or do tey also like online chess , the format teams play in

is there an issue re timing out ?

has the player shown affinity to team theme in forum ?

generally admins will recruit in a respectful way , if you feel like you are getting too many invites  go to your options and press not accepting team invites

no one wants to upset any here and admins will respect your wishes if they dont make it clear to them so they have to understand

the key thing is for you to enjoy your time at chess.com and not feel that you are doing things you do not wish to do

i hope this helps in showing how admins approach recruitment it isnt the only way but its how i do it

thanks for the solid advice Anok1.

I agree some groups (themed ones) are easier to 'market' than others...

the hard thing is as a admin; how would you know if someone might consider your group.  our group is based upon chess improvement- which is a very common ideal around here...

but I think some people that just want to collect information would not be served by our group.  we want people who analyze stuff, and enjoy sharing stuff.  That is the Ideal!

If anyone wanted to join that kind of group, we are starting to pick up some pretty well known analysts (alvin_cruz, xplayer, milliern, etc). and we would welcome the content.

pm me if interested.

I often think guys that want "study" partners would be ideal for our group.  many in OUr group would be awesome players to study with.

look to forums on chess here for active analysers of chess lines , i see a few names you mentioned in post above who fit that bill so you are prob well on the way in this
