U need 5 things to become a GM they are:

1- preciesty you need as much as possible of it.

2- To be smart at least to a certain degree.

3- To have a strong visual imagination.

4- The ability to follow a systym seriously ; in one word:ordre

5- Not to retreat whatever what happens.

These are the most important conditions.

I know the method (well, kind of, only through second hand sources admittedly) and scientists have coined a term chunking. The chunking is on top of learning basic rules and principles, which (superficially) can and should be broken at very specific times.  If you violate don't open the position if the opponent has the bishop pair for example it can be justified as principle of conversion of advantages or even economy of defense (make as few concessions as possible).

From reading Think Like a Grandmaster, Improving Chess Thinker and How to Think in Chess I learned that titled players have a more organized and systematic thinking process.  There are many steps, you need to factor in many strategies, imbalances, etc., tie them together, decide on candidates that match your goal, and calculate.  Sounds like a lot doesn't it?  At first it is, but you're supposed to practice it so often you don't even know you're doing it anymore.  Like Heisman said of a master's protocol:

"Subject M-1 did not verbalize which side he felt was better, by how much, and why.  When a player gets to that level board vision becomes so proficient that the base information is usually quickly assimilated and escapes the necessity for conscious verbalization"

In other words, masters have obtained unconscious competence.

Then you actually have to play enough games in tournaments, which cost money and sometimes you even need to stay at hotels, which costs money.  Whatever you do, don't use the Internet or phone there.  Even the Dictator had a joke that anyone who's stayed at a hotel can related to, and the $20 per day of Internet isn't hyperbole either.
