National chess day was put in place by president Gerald Ford in 1976. National chess day is the on the second Saturday in October which is tomorrow.

Not entirely true. In 1967, during the Hamburger Hill battle, as it kept undecided, Norvietnamese and American commanders agreed to decide the victory by playing chess. The American played white, and he got a brilliant victory using the Evans Gambit. Then the Vietnamese retired from the hill. After that, president Johnsonn put in place 12th October as the National Chess Day.
