Most titled players play for tens of years, and many aren't coaches.
Has anyone become a titled player without coaching in chess

Even if you are not being formally coached all the learning available and requirements to get there mean the person is coaching themselves. I don't recall anyone claiming to have coached Bobby Fischer to his GM title, he was just that good. But my memory might be mistaken.
I have written about the strong players in my city, looking at their growth patterns. This was pre-internet, with ratings only for classical OTB play and with most of the players starting competitive chess in high school.
A player who became an IM and was rated as high as 8th in the US reached the Expert level (2000) in two years and the Master level (2200) in three years.
several players who reached the NM level with 2300 ratings reached Class A (1800) in one to two years, 2000 in three to four years, and 2200 in four to seven years.
None of these players had coaches. They learned on their own from books and from tournament play.
Today, players tend to start younger. There are more training opportunities for juniors. And there are more training options with the internet. These all make it easier for players with potential to be identified and developed.
What is clear from studies going back to Elo’s work is that players with great potential show remarkable progress whenever they are exposed to chess. Elo himself taught children to play. One summer, he taught 1100 kids to play chess in a 1-week program. After only one week, he identified two kids who he thought had Master potential. And he was right about one of them!
