Has Chess.com ever had a worse idea than Vacations?

When you come back from vacation you will always have at least 24 hours in any online game.  This is to prevent players from coming back and checking messages, etc., or just forgetting they only have an hour or two left in a given game.

It's applied evenly, so the only complaint is that you didn't understand how it works.  So whose fault is that?

This is not my experience at all. Multiple times I have come back to have 2 hours or less on my clock, by design, when I have let my Timeout Protection kick in. This was done to minimize the amount of Vacation needed, since I knew I would not need hours to contemplate my move(s) upon my return. Not once did my clock go back to 24 hours remaining, unless I used less than 24 hours of Vacation.

cookiemonster, where were you when paul1144 was whining up the joint? (the number in his name I'm fairly sure being his whine per hour ratio).  Couldn't agree with your points more.  Can't believe we are still having this discussion.

Not sure if directed at me, but I find vacation vacation abuse if you go into it about 30 times/6 months. Unless you honestly go 30 times, but I am 120% sure that it is just to gain extra time for the 100s of games he is playing.

ElKitch, nothing I've said has been directed at you specifically, but to answer your last post - so what if someone uses vacation time to manage his games?  Going into vacation 30 times in 6 months reduces your vacation bank by a minimum of 30 days (you cannot use vacation for less than a one day reduction in available vacation time, each time vacation kicks in).  And that is what it is there for (or any other reason anyone decides it is there for).  Whether I go golfing for two weeks, or whether it is Sunday night and I want to watch TV instead of thinking about my games and know that auto vacation will kick in so that I can pick up my games Monday morning, it is no one's business but mine.  If you don't like it - resign.  I could care less if my use of vacation time ticks off an opponent.  In fact, it kind of makes me laugh that someone would allow themselves to be bothered about something so trivial.

I am playing a guy right now, in answer to his open seek.  I made the first move.  His 3 day clock ran down and he went on auto vacation.  That was at least two weeks ago and he still has another week of vacation left.  Guess what - I don't care.  I have other games to think about.  I hope he's off somewhere having a great time and will come back to the game fresh and rested and ready to have a good game.

ElKitch, this is not directed at you.  What is it about this topic that is so complicated, and causes people so much consternation?  I have vacation time.  I am a premium member.  I have a lot of vacation time.  I can use it however I want.  It is none of your business how I use it.  If I use it excessively, I will not have any vacation left and then will have to survive on only my wits and wild berries.  Whatever will I do?

Of course. That's a double edged sword two way street. Just like their chess clock, if they use up their vacation time it's game over so it's up to them to manage their time wisely. Have you ever played live chess and wondered what a player is doing while their clock ticks down? WHO CARES! Maybe they're down the hall taking a dump.

I think that in most cases, people are either changing song (me) or letting their time run out (sore losers).

Every now and then, usually about once a year, I get chessed out.  I never know when it is going to happen so I can't plan for it by letting my games finish.  It happened this year over Christmas.  I just didn't feel like playing chess, or thinking about chess.  So I let my games go on vacation for three or four weeks.  The no vacation 7 day per move tournament I was playing in was on break as we waited for others to finish round 2.  I finished round 2 on May 4, 2012 and did not start round 3 until February 13, 2013, so it wasn't a factor.

Additionally, I'm not sure whether free memberships come with vacation, but one of the things I pay for with a premium membership is the auto vacation feature.  Chess.com is a business, so like it or not, it has to include features to induce people to pay for memberships.  Auto vacation and the accumulation of vacation time is a big one for me.  I am willing to, and do, pay for it.

Yeah, but I don't mean to start that arguement here.  (Gotta be more careful with what I say! Foot in Mouth. Use left and right arrows to navigate.)

ElKitch

All true, I am just annoyed because it happens so frequently that he is down to a bunch of hours and when I check he is *poof* back at a whole lot more. And it happens allmost every move. Is there a way where I can see how much vacation he has left? It happened so often.. it should almost be depleted.

Ubik42

You kidding? I have over 2 months of vacation. If you budget your time you can store up quite a bit. Never can tell when I may need it.

Havent used a day in nearly 3 weeks, thats almost a record for me.

ElKitch

I am talking about someone Im playing.

Ubik42

yes, but with say 2 months vacation, If I started using one every 3-4 days...how long would just those last me?

this is my position at the moment:round 2 tourney, myself and 1 other player have won 7-lost 1 to each other,2 games remaining, with mr xxxx who is gone on vacation with 103 days.1 other player has won4-lost 4 ,with 2 games to play with mr xxxx, since he cant make it to round3.  I  cant see him trying to hard after all it makes no difference to him since he is out no matter what .this will give mr xxxx 6 points.i think in a tourney situation there should be a time limit ,a reasonable time but. 3 months is going to far. thankyou.

Someone, I forget who (maybe Scottrf) said that in a similar situation in the past, Kohai called the tournament and progressed it to the next round. Depending on how long you have been waiting, she might do the same here.

Apologies if it wasn't Scottrf. It's somewhere in this thread but I am not going through 17 other pages to find it.

Just because his Group is ready to progress doesn't mean they all are.

He says he's in round 2 of his tournament and there are only 2 games remaining.

He could mean just his group, but he doesn't say that.

Scottrf

Yeah it was me.

The tournament he speaks of has 15 Groups in Round 2. 9 of them, his Group included, have yet to have the winner decided.

Slow day or something?

He made a comment, I took it at face value. He mentioned no groups at all. Simply said that he was in a tournament and that there were 2 games left. With only his words to go on, it was the sensible assumption.

If you don't have anything better to do than trawl through his tournament info for a ficticious win, great. Personally, I wouldn't have bothered.

Eh, disagree. I find it more likely that people who have nothing better to do than complain about Vacation use probably don't have the sense to think that there are Groups that exist other than their own. Especially since he said something about 103 Vacation days, which isn't actually a thing.

This is just noise

So I have to wait 1.5 months to get 2 wins vs. someone who has been banned from the site

I thought that games with banned people were automatically resigned
