Have computers ruined chess?
Right now, I am inclined to think so.
You look reclined to me.

Granted, computers have not COMPLETELY ruined chess; otherwise none of us would be here and there would be no World Chess Championship, etc.
However, I do believe that computers take away more from the game than they add.
It's like steroids.
Do they enhance sports because they make athletes bigger, faster, and stronger, thus increasing the amount of spectacular moments in sports, and thus increasing the overall thrill and enjoyment of the fans? Maybe. But it also gives athletes an easy way out. The giants and legends before them had to work hard, dedicate their blood, sweat, and tears, and sacrifice to become the people they became. They earned their admiration and respect the hard way. But their stats and wins don't even compare to the modern era with its drug users.
Steroids affects not only pro athletes but amateurs as well. Anyone who's played high school or college sports will testify to that. Chess engines affect not only the top-level pros, but players down at your local chess club as well! Even I take advantage of the benefits Fritz has to offer. I wouldn't be as strong of a player otherwise.
But the tactical legends of the game, Kasparov, Fischer, Tal, Morphy, Capablanca, etc. would get shredded by the cold, efficient, and ruthlessly static play of Rybka 3! There goes your home runs; it's mountains and mountains of base hits that win the game for you now. Fritz 11 would laugh at your speculative Queen sacrifice. Undaunted by your bold psychological play, it would find a way to win a pawn and checkmate you 50 moves later.
computers have helped alot of things, but computer engines have destroyed chess, we need a GM to come along and put them in their place. In 96 kasparov defeated deep blue but in the end deep blue got the last laugh. I can't see a human stacking up to a computer in a bullet, no matter the time constraint they always move faster and more accuratly than humans.

Steroids, just heard in a previos cooment.
That is how we will start to get even with computers. lol
Foot races and cars is not the same as computers and chess.
1. Cars travel faster than humans, but having a car doesn't necessarily impact how fast or slow you or anybody else you know will travel. However, chess engines will definitely impact how you and the rest of the world plays chess.
2. Having a car in a foot race will not necessarily help you. It will be blatantly obvious to everyone that you're cheating, but not so with chess engines!
3. People are still interested in both cars and foot races because they test different things. Car races test driving skills, mechanics, engineering, and things like that. Foot races test stamina, strength, speed, mental-toughness, and the will. Computer chess and human chess are still the same; both have the exact same rules, but one always outperforms the other.
