Having trouble understand opening lines

Avatar of xman720

One thing I am doing to learn chess is study the normal openings, but some of them leave me very confused as to why players follow this as the "normal" line. This one leaves me supremely confused and so I'm posting an example- the Nimzowitsch variation of Sicilian.

I hope this isn't a stupid question with an obvious answer, but it leaves me very confused.

EDIT: Ugh, wrong forum. Sorry.

Did you mean this?

I don't know where I got d4. At least I'm not crazy then.

The idea looks like 3...Nxe4 4.d5 with a cramping influence, but seems dubious.  4...e6 5.dxe6,fxe6 with a nice game for black.
