As I have learnt from the forums, it is impolite to waste the other persons time forcing them to play out the mate. The Russian girl should have resigned.

Should I then resign on move #1 against anyone rated significantly higher than me? Since it would be rude to force them to demonstrate they are better than I am.

I think she just completly feaked out. I'm sure she isn't always that rude...I hope.
Girya did smile at the end after Ushenina walked off. I bet Ushenina was one of the students that said early in her training days "why do I need to learn such an unlikely ending, It's never going to actually happen in my games anyway".

Yup, the biggest surprise for me was how poorly she handled the situation.
