I think the reason for the symbols is to make it easier to accommodate other languages. I would guess that at least a third of chess.com users do not read or write English.
I would like to see the symbols made bigger and/or redesigned.

I too, am disappointed with the new chess.com, but it seems to be the way of things. One must always improve even if it ain't broken. However, and I do not know how long it will be available, there is a way to get back to the good old chess.com. Just look for the command:" the old chess.com". Click it and you'll be back home. It appears in several places on the site. I have been using the new version and have slowly been finding the commands that I was used to. They are there.
