Help, I'm drowning

Sort:
Becca_Baxter

For quite a while, I was winning games and got to my highest rating since I started on chess.com winning loads of games with very few losses over quite a streak. Now I've played eight games in a row over three days, lost them all and now my rating has plummeted by not far short of 100 points. I was making steady progress generally and without warning, it has all fallen apart.

Was the climb a series of flukes, is the fall a series of bad calls and I'm just falling back to where my rating should really be? Am I just useless at chess?

I need guidance. Should I just stop playing for a while and go back to the books, or should I persevere...or even just give up chess for a few weeks?

Stupid game anyway

I have the same issue, hence why today I will be closing my account. I believe they are using bots to manipulate the ratings, so we keep playing. I have had these so called drops loads of times, one minute you are playing and beating everyone, the next you start losing against everyone. They also play weird openings and all of sudden they are faster too, then like magic every oppponet gets easy, making loads of blunders, openings are normal and they become slower too.

We are being conned. I play on lichess, that doesn't happen on there, yes you lose maybe 5 in a row, but not 10, 15 or even 20, like on here. That is the proof that this isn't something we are doing, if it was it would happen on lichess too.

The whole site is one big con from what I can see, that's why they invented those meaningless leagues, just to keep you playing. It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and nothing else. No traffic no $$$$$$, they need people to keep playing.

On lichess I am 1800 on rapid, on here a 1000, that huge gap makes non sense, unless we have rating manipulation going on. I have dropped 300 points in two days on here, losing almost all games. Then in just over a day I climb back from 690 to 980, and I do it very easily.

aw you're doing the right thing playing rapid games but make sure you're learning from the games by checking your blunders to see where you went wrong happy.png

i can give book and coach recs if you want it. and if you live in london then i can give some chess club recommendations too x

it's normal to fluctuate by a hundred points, especially if those hundred points were near your peak rating. Although it says that your peak is 1100, you got that on day 2 of playing rapid, so that's not really accurate - 1000 is probably your peak.

Usually, a break for a few days is how I reset. Most of it is mental, and the rest is technical (you know less than your opponents if you're playing at your peak and they aren't).

Why is it always the low rated players complaining?

6 the higher rated players know what they need to do to improve.

What they should do is allow us to play the bots to establish a rating.

This used to be allowed. They had lots of bots in the pool, such as @stockfish, @lc0, and player bots like @hikaru-BOT . What ended up happening is that people figured out pretty quickly that they could farm the bot's ratings in blitz and bullet by closing the position and shuffling their pieces until the computer ran out of time. Essentially it was legal rating manipulation, so they took the bots out of the pool.

So, since you can beat higher rated bots than your level, figure a 1300 bot puts you into the 1000-1300 range for human pairings. Beat a 1500 bot and get paired with 1200-1500. 1700 bots would get you paired with 1500 to 1800, and 2000 bots would put you in the range of 1700 up depending on whether the bot is 2000, 2200, or 2500.

The issue is that bots don't play like people. A 1600 bot is in reality a 2800 (or even better!) rated bot that's programmed to play blunders. Since computers don't know the difference between human moves that make a little sense and stupid moves, you'll have bots that are rated 2000 randomly hang a piece, because it's their allotted "blunder time", when a 2000 human would actually not hang a piece but instead make a series of subpar moves that leads to a losing position or losing a few pawns.

Very often you'll see posts here in the forums with someone saying "I beat X rated bot as a X-500 rated player". The only accurate estimate of your rating is the current one you have.

A new account from 2024 that's 2000+ would be somewhat suspicious.

Snowchlobe

11 i am not an online player. if you're suspicious of me then play me in 10 second chess.

#7, what does my rating have to do with that? Please stay relevant.
Abtectous
Snow probably just made a new account because they didn’t like the stats on their old account
Abtectous
Snow, if you play OTB then put ur OTB rating on your chess, com account to make it less sus
Snowchlobe

My post was more relevant to what you said than your post was to the OP's topic. Always fun and games to call other people low rated, but all of a sudden when it's your turn now it's "off topic" and "irrelevant".

They have an ELO mouth rating of 192. They did start the day on 300, but they have been mouthing off quite a lot today and been blundering all over the place. Even when they have been checkmated they still want to play on. People on low ELO mouth ratings should know when to be quiet.

Snowchlobe is hot...as for YOU, Abtectous, some would say that YOU are "low-rated", so quit complaining about people complaining...

hermanjohnell

Games are meant to be played, not worked at. You play because it´s fun. You win some and you lose some. Your rating is just a number.
