... GM Spassky spent about 5 minutes looking over the position then played 15.bxc3. 30 seconds later he changed his mind and took back the move. He then grabbed a seat, took off his sunglasses and sat opposite me. He thought out loud and several times went to move but changed his mind. He said, "This is a very interesting position. I cannot find a square." He then thought some more. After what seemed like an eternity, I suddenly thought about Bobby Fischer in 1960 and how Boris had beaten him despite being behind. I said, "Everyone here wants to beat you Mr Spassky but I would be happy with a draw." He replied, "Okay, if you want draw in such position, of course I accept." He said to the adjudicator that he needed a 5 minute break and that was that. Thanks again to everyone for their help!

A lot of it now on youtube for all to see. There's a slow stretch but the action restarts at 2:18.

Do NOT brush your teeth the night before or the morning of the simul.  Breath heavily through your mouth when he's at the board.  This will give you a better chance.  Of course, I'm kidding...  Play your favorite defense and go for it!  If he picks you apart, you get to learn from it.

wow what a beautiful position, I wouldn't offer a draw if you paid me Laughing. seriously im not even the one who played it and i cant stop wondering what would have happened. but i cant blame you for it, it was a draw against spassky after all. Great play!!

@TadDude: Thanks for the YouTube link. I guess he never took the glasses off, but I could see his eyes from my angle. It's funny how memories work. Anyhow, you are a fantastic detective. I hope I'll be able to stand you a drink or 2 some day.

TadDude

I accept your (virtual) drinks.

A toast. Sláinte! ... ahhh that was good.

To Kolems. May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past.

Congratulations Kolems !  I suggest you take your autographed score sheet and put it in a nice frame so as to never lose it ! I drew Korchnoi in an exhibition in the 70s in Georgia/USA and today dont know where that scoresheet is !??  Don't make that mistake !

Kolems

Fantastic video, Vonzi. If it wasn't for you I would have very little footage.TadDude found this straight away. It's a pity we didn't get talking in Zurich. It's a very beautiful city.

Don't worry, my wife is taking care of that. All I have to do in return is replace the tail-light bulb on her car.

Cool - thanks for the follow-up, posting of the game, and the personal stories. I would never have had the guts to play e5 against history's best King's Gambit player... :-)

Just drink a shot of vodka five minutes before the game, and all will be fine, trust me.

Myabe thw vodka will help if you let mister Spassky drink it.

I have a question Kolems, did Spassky play the kings gambit on every board where 1..... e5 was played ?

I would have played 1... e5 because of that reputation.

I think so. He started by saying "Play 'e4' all boards!" and only a handful played 1...e5 in return. The player to my right did and GM Spassky played 2.f4. Alot of people opted for the Scicilian as far as I could gather.

Did you happen to catch what he plays against the Caro-Kann?
