Help me !!!!!!
~~~~~~~Most kids in my class have been playing for 2 or 3 years, but they don’t even know how all the pieces move properly~~~~~~~~~
Are you playing OTB or Online? How will they be playing?
OTB actually they played with their family members and they did not get online experience at all I have been hearing they had a chess coach previous year but the it was the school chess coach but he quit like this year starting so anyway but I still don't understand how they are like doing so much mistake they are literally playing like 100elo the teachers said teach them it will improve your leadership skills and maybe all of the classmates and you manage to bag A team championship so I said OK
They don't focus much on chess but now they will be focusing and even the head girl wants to know how to play chess
From what you said I would start from the beginning with demonstrations.
How to set up the board, how the pieces move. What check means. The 3 options to get out of check (move the King, ,capture with a piece or with a King if it is not protected, or block, along with the rules that you can never make a move that puts your King in check, and when someone is checked they must get out of check on their move. Followed with Checkmate, and then castling. Ending with Promoting a pawn. Then let them play while info is still fresh in their minds.
Then slowly add new info on following days. When castling, it is legal to castle if the rook is under attack, and in o-o-o if the rook passes through attack. When a piece is pinned it still protects a piece from being captured by a King, various draws, en passant, etc. and how to mate against lone king with KR, KRR, KQ,
When they play if any question arises about a legal move they can call you over.
Once the rules and basics have been covered, then you can progress to concepts, opening principles, keeping your pieces protected, trading pieces so one comes out even or ahead, along with tactics etc..
You should focus on ensuring they know the basics
Many students do not know the basics including how to place the chess board (white to the right) and how pieces move.
The problem is students tend to learn bad habbits from each other. So the first step is to fix those mistakes eg castling king side, move the king two squares, but castling queen side, how many squares does the king move... you will find a lot of kids will say 3, even some of your more experienced.. But when castling the king moves only 2 squares.
depending on how many kids in the group, youll probably find the younger ones are moving the pieces incorrectly.
Thats where I would start
Hey everyone,
This is kind of crazy, and honestly, I’m still in shock. I’m just an 800-rated player—still a beginner—and I joined a new school two weeks ago. But somehow, all the teachers and students want me to teach chess!
Most kids in my class have been playing for 2 or 3 years, but they don’t even know how all the pieces move properly. Some children know how the chess pieces move, but still the thing is they are lacking in tactics. The second type of children are those who do not know how the pieces move and make blunders all the time. Both of these groups make blunders constantly, so I’ve been beating pretty much everyone without losing. Because of that, they think I’m some kind of chess genius!
Now, the teachers have actually given me permission to teach chess during lunch break. So here I am, the new kid who just started, suddenly the chess teacher. The first graders are even excited to learn from me—it feels unreal!
I want to be honest—I’m definitely not an expert. I don’t always see complicated tactics or advanced strategies. But I do know the basics like forks, pins, and simple traps. I know tactics because I actually watch chess on YouTube, I don’t do social media or anything else, and I read chess books. I’ve read a couple of chess books and I’m trying to learn more every day.
How do I teach kids who barely know the rules when I’m still learning myself? How can I help them get better while also improving my own game? And what should I focus on teaching first?
I’d really appreciate any tips or advice. This is a big opportunity for me, and I want to do a good job.
Thanks you in advance 🙂
