Plz help. I need an opening for a school tournament. They’re really powerful
Changing your opening is the worst thing you can do before playing in a tournament. Play the openings you know. Study endgames and tactics instead, that's gonna be more powerful.
You need to know an opening so stick to what you know.
I like playing queen's gambit as white then 1.c5 as black. Seems like a complementary system.

I didn’t even know that my opening was an opening, by myself before I started playing serious I had my nice little opening, when I started playing serious I realized it was queens gambit
I like the Caro-Kann, Kings Indian for black
And for white, Italian, Ruy Lopez (although it has a lot of theory), London, and Queens gambit

The Scotch is the best opening for beginners in my humble opinion, very beginner friendly.
