They can, but they shouldn't. There's a high chance that the combination will fail if you don't calculate the forcing lines. In TT, here on chess.com you can go by intuition, although I wouldn't advise it, but in an actual game no way!
Heuristic thinking in combinations
totally agree with Estragon, there are some positions where its almost imposible to calculate all the posibilities but after analizying some posible lines you can "feel" the result is gonna be good for you, in other situations you can see that your oponent its gonna be so bad positionally after the sacrifice and youll get a lot of positional advantage that it doesnt matter if you dont get a mate or material inmediatly after the sacrifice.
I know that positional moves are based on heuristic considerations, but can combinations also be based on an intuitive/heuristic basis.
