Hidden Message in the film 'Pawn Sacrifice'

So in the scene where Boris Spasskij is at the arcade (0:36min25sec) and his second arrives in the limo and approaches him, this is the conversation that they have:

-Fischer needs to be stopped. He plays recklessly. He will do anything not to draw. You will be patient ... and then you will crush him.

-Spassky: (Gestures with his head in approval) It is your shot.

HOWEVER,,,,, If you watch the scene with Spanish subtitles, boy, it's a whole different conversation. Could the director have included it in this way to hint at how the Soviets rigged matches (which of course, I know, we already knew, but shocking for the non chess player.) Here's them speaking (in Russian of course), same scene, with subtitles on:

-Spassky's second: We shall fix a draw between Tal and Luvinsky, and Steiger will lose against you. If Bobby reaches the final match...you will be there to KO him.

-Spassky: It's your shot (at pinball machine)

WOAH,,,, REVELATION?

What do you think? If you own the DVD, check it if you don't believe me. Post your comments.

Amazing find. That conversation seemed strange to me because it made no sense when I had watched with English subtitles. Now, it makes sense. Thank you. Could that person who comes to speak to Spassky be some soviet agent? Also, the question about Ivanovich by Spassky seemed interesting to me because of Spassky's expression.

I think Soviets chose Spassky to face Fischer because Fischer had never defeated Spassky before that final (correct me if I am wrong).

Spassky wasn't chosen, he just happened to be the reigning World Champion at the time.

pawn sacrifice is the rare movie in which the real life person is both taller and better looking than the short slightly goofy-faced actor who portrayed him... no, sorry, i didn't find a hidden message in the pinball scene.

yore right. Fischer had never beaten Spassky, prior to the world championship. I think he had drawn him...

Also wiki tells me that Tal was not in candidates match. So, I think those Spanish subtitles are not quite accurate. Though overall they are correct that soviets were fixing matches.

Also, wiki tells me that apparantly, in some interzonal Benko gave his place for Fischer with Euwe's help. So, clearly, it was not individuals playing each other. Of course, its not the same as cheating or fixing(which the soviets were doing) but it was still bending of the rules.

@Ashva,

When I saw it theaters, I seemed strange to me too. I should have mentioned in post #1 that they're talking about Piatigorsky Cup, in which Fischer massacres Ivanović in the opening round, so they're plotting how to assure Spasskij enough points that with a draw or win in the final round he takes the tournament, which he does.

The guy who shows up.is indeed a Soviet agent, with two bodyguards. I think is Spasskij's second because he's always with him. Spasskij looks disgusted at how they made up that whole lie about Ivanović catching influenza,.and they're flying him back to USSR, because why else would he lose so terribly to Fischer? (It was like... having a building fall on me, Ivanović says) lol.

How much of this was artistic license?

More conspiracy crap, and who cares about events that may or may not have happened almost 50 years ago? They change nothing now.

@destroyer,

Calm down. It's only my opinion about one American actor. I love tons others, George Clooney, Edward Norton, etc. Sandra bullock & Mira sorvino, Mary Elizabeth Winsted.

No soy monedita de oro!

(I'm not a gold coin, if I were, I'd make everyone happy but I'm not.)  ;-)

Of course, who cares about history?

Kickshifter

How about the hidden message, that (Fischer) took doping - hence the paranoia etc drug-related behaviour. It was the Cold war after all

JuergenWerner
Well yeah, rigged so that so and so wins on tie breaks. The Chinese rigged badminton in the summer Olympics. Oh, and they got caught
Kickshifter

Well, Tal was on drugs, alcohol and cigarettes, but it was not considered doping at that time. Later on, it was forbidden

sea_of_trees

Tal's favorite song was Alcohol and Cigarettes

by Oasis.

Kickshifter

or 'cure for pain'

by Morphine :))
