Higher Rated Players Aborting

This is a topic that is a pet peeve of mine that I finally needed to vent about. There is nothing more annoying to me than when someone higher rated than you aborts the game when they see they are a better player. Are they not aware that you can choose what scope of players you want to play?! I myself only play players at least 100 points higher rated than me (not for the pretentious belief that I will surely win against lower rated players, rather I want to improve, which is why it makes sense to play stronger players). If you are one of these "abortion players" as I refer to them, please do yourself and your opponent a favor, and change the scope of players to suit who you want to play!

Well, you're rated in the 1200s.

Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously?

I admit, I was rated 1149 and decided to stop toying around with my opponents and to just start leading a clown parade through Gotham City on my way to a 1600 rating.

I know that I'm not done yet because I'm actually a 2000+ level player.  However, because you're still rated in the 1200s after nearly 600 games.. I'd venture to say that you're not much better than that rating of yours.

My advice?  I have no advice.

Really good chess players should not be afraid to challenge anyone, especially the mediocre and the weak.  It accomplishes little to nothing to destroy a weaker opponent, but aborting games is a subtle expression of fear that the lesser opponent might get lucky and pull off a victory.

I don't avoid challenges from weaker players.  I just destroy them and move on to the next game.  No torture, no prolonged death, just a quick killing the way chess is supposed to be played.  Then I thank my opponent for the match and bid him well.

That's my personal expression of good sportsmanship and my adherence to the fair play rules.  I call it Joker's Fair Play and Good Sportsmanship Approach to Competitive Rated Chess Matches or JFPGSACRCM

Sometimes its not that easy to "destroy" a lower rated player...you know how when you play against a higher rated player, you don't fear losing as much and you play with more risks? Well, the opposite is true when playing lower rated players; you fear losing and you play more conservatively, and this mindset doesn't often lead to a quick victory. So some people just abort at sight to avoid playing at all and so they maintain their high rating.

I don't fear losing... it's a game.  Besides, I'm a clown and I couldn't play conservatively with my green hair follicles, purple suit, and thick face make-up.

Some people abort games because they are afraid of losing?  Perhaps that means that they are overrated.

I don't fear a drop in ratings because I know that even at 1600, I'm rated well below my actual abilities at the 2000+ level.

Thanks, I hope it doesn't make me look fat.

I think you're missing my point. I was not asking for advice nor was I implying I am better than my rating (although it is hard to say how accurate blitz chess is of someone's skill as in most instances you barely have any time to think). I was just pointing out that people can change the scope of who they want to play. MDJMASTER had an insightful view that perhaps sheds some light as to why they do that, but still the whole point of this was people not realizing they can select the rating of their opponents.

The Joker's face being white was not due to make-up. It was the result of what happened during Jack Napier's encounter with Batman in the Axis Chemicals incident. He actually had been using make-up to make his face skin-colored again on a few occasions (like the dinner at the Flugelheim museum, or the meeting where other mobsters were eliminated).

It's pretty sad when a troll can't even get their troll indentity right. He's probably some 14 year old who's only exposure to Batman are the new movies where Batman's voice is unintelligible, gravelly barking.

He tries to say he's so much better than Kromhawk because he has a 1600 rating (whoopty do!) but Kromhawk's rating and his really aren't that far apart.

Sometimes lower rated opponents aren't really lower rated.  You don't know what their actual abilitiy is.  Stronger rated players would rather play against players of equal or greater strength because they stand to gain more rating points if they win and lose less points if they lose.  If a 1600 player lost to you he would lose almost 20 points but would only gain a few if he won.  So don't take it personally, just hit new game and find someone else to play.

I think everyone's missing the main point.  Anyone who wants to improve, will probably try to play people rated 1 or 2 hundred points higher.

So, Mr 1200, you want to play a 1400. Well, that 1400 wants to play a 1600...

You don't have a "right" to play someone higher than you. Take the games you can get, and try to learn from them. I also try to play against higher rated players, but it doesn't always happen.

I have the same problem when I try to play higher rated players. Even though I do play decently when I do find one.
