Susan Polgar's statement is flawless IMO: it's calm, measured, dignified, respectful to all sides and a laudable attempt to defuse what might yet become a very stormy issue.
Why can't we just install her as FIDE President?

Several posters on this thread have already pointed out that Iran was the only country to bid for this event, what exactly do you expect FIDE to do? Aborting the Women's World Championship is hardly an option, it's a showcase event which is already somewhat troubled anyway (*cough* Hou Yifan *cough*).
And I already replied to that in post #110. It's the fake type of argument of every organization failing in its duties.
Rather than being an excuse, it is the definitive proof of the incompetence of the FIDE management (and the last sentence in your prev post suggests you agree with that).
Thus, any sensible practical solution starts with the replacement of the FIDE top. Next, apologizing to the women. Next, negotiating the championship out of Iran. If such proves impossible, find a way to compensate the women refusing to attend it, for instance financially and by a quick follow-up WC in say a year. Just be intelligent and practical about it. Iranian authorities are not to blame for any of the FIDE foul-ups. They only acted in the countries interest.
Yep, Bronstein gave them a wise advice, just disolve the organization, but they didn't pay attention to him.
By comparison, Iran calling on Nazi Paikidze to wear a headscarf does rather pale - not into insignificance exactly but...
My point is that we're really slick when it comes to pointing the finger at the 'others', we're less good when it comes to looking at ourselves.
Very true, I say that all the time. We should clean up our own backyards before pointing the finger. But at the same time we shouldn't be condoning oppression. That's how this action by FIDE is being seen as. Some will argue against that notion, others for it. I argue for it, that is that FIDE condones the oppression of women.
Yes I do see that CK but there's quite a bit missing from this narrative.
First of all I think it's most unfair to point the finger at FIDE, this body has its faults certainly, but it can only work with what's available and Iran was the only country to make a bid for this event.
I also feel that the narrative surrounding the US Champion's boycott has been skewed beyond the point where it has any real meaning - that's the narrative I hasten to add, not necessarily the boycott itself. The Carlsen-Karjakin match will take place in New York but I haven't heard anyone accusing FIDE of 'condoning' US imperialism. Why not? This has been - and still is - far more oppressive, violent, bloody and destructive than anything the Iranians have ever done. That's not to trivialise what happens in Iran, but we should remember that it was a US administration which helped install the Ayatollah and his cronies in the first place back in 1979. People often forget that, and we shouldn't forget that.
Britain and the US have a long and squalid history of intervening in the region and that history continues to unfold: only a couple of weeks ago Washington quietly announced a $38 billion arms deal with Israel and nobody batted an eyelid.
Expressing outrage over Iran's - admittedly oppressive and potty - dress code while our own side sponsors a mass genocide in the occupied territories is not acceptable.
I know (admirable) people who express outrage against any injustice. Obviously they never have a rest. To me the real issue about this is you simply can't force people in that way. It is absurd, like having a monarchy in the middle of 21th Century (wait a minute...).
This world have no rules. Luckily in a few billions of years the sun will eat our arses, as my son likes to say.
Remeber my dear friends, the Trojan war was fought over the abduction of a single woman which the Persians would later use to deride the noble Greeks! Are you wussies gonna stand up for Nazi Paikidze or are you gonna let the Persians and FIDE boss her?
Supporting women? Ladies and gentlemen, I give you....Margaret Thatcher.
She's pan breed ages ago!
Polgars statement is very sensible. 1st I've read her response. Many here slammed Susan, saying she supported the repression of Woman's rights. Nothing could be further from what she said.
Polgars statement is completely sensible - if you are a woman considering a holiday booking in Iran.
But our woman is not! She is facing a terrible dilemma between compromising her feelings and convictions, and damaging her professional career by giving up her ambitions in the pinnacle chess event and losing substantial income if not rating points.
And this dilemma for her was created knowingly and willingly by a few men in power who forgot who they are working for. We in FIDE, are we here to serve the men and women in our federation, or are we here to serve a religious propaganda machine? Isn't that a difficult question? Ahh, we have thought about it and came up with the answer. Whatever brings in the dough! And today's winner is ....... Iran!
Though it is crystal clear that FIDE is the only real issue in this debate, everyone is pulling it into his private space of unresolved issues with religion, culture and morality of a complete lifetime - if not beyond that. Wake up debaters, and look where the fire is!
