Music is my favourite hobby, chess comes in second place here
Hobbies Better Than Chess

Well I draw and paint. I'm a Fine Art graduate. One famous artist, Duchamp, packed in art to study chess at the height of his success and devoted the rest of his to the game.

Watching UFC. UFC is like chess, but the stakes/consequences are much higher for the competitors.
Ultimate fa$%#ot cuddling.
Say that to Anderson Silva's face. Then read some of Reuben Fine's writing on the psychology of chess.
Nah, he'd probably start hugging me or something, and I'm not into dudes.
Silva is more of a striker than grappler. Unless you meant Reuben Fine, who is dead. Fine thought chess was an attempt at mutual masturbation and repression of the homosexual urge, with many of the pieces largely representing phallic symbols. Hope this doesn't kill your love for the game, since you are "not into dudes".

What other hobbies do you chess players participate in? What can amount to the same or similar joy that we recieve from chess?
My hobbies are Chess, Video Games (especially RPGs) and Football (soccer). All three of them give me the same pleasure each in it's own way; Chess improves my mentality, Football improves my physical condition and health (too bad I don't play as often as I used to..) and Video Games cover the "fun" part.

I play tennis, cello, I use computer science to write fun programs, I mess around in linux, I play lots of board games (settlers of catan, puerto rico), I build weird things, and I'm a math and physics major.
Chess is great. It's something, one of the very few things, that really has a one to one correspondance between what you put in and what you get out of it. No luck, no one else's fault but your own.
are you a ubuntu fan?
Hellz no. Arch ftw.

I love chess but can't help reflecting on the arbitrariness of its rules compared to draughts and GO. Emmanual Lasker said that if people on other planets played games they would play something like GO. A minimum number of rules and great depth of strategy constitute a pure game IMO.
I will probably take my GO set up the chess club next year and try and play a few games. I do find that close attention to games subconsciously amplifies certain actions in the real world. Eg I was playing poker a lot a one time and the experience made me on one occasion tell a fib to a salesman regarding another quote to get a cheaper price. Games may be a microcosm of the "real" world and act as "spatial/active" mantras (as opposed to sound ?) if focused upon !?

UFC is just as interesting as chess is. Tactics and Strategy are involved, especially once they get on the floor.
AND people who don't 'resign' don't get flamed on forum threads, the just get the crap bashed out of them .
i dont know if you count "gettin comfortable" with my wife as a hobby but thats about the only thing i enjoy more than playing chess; and truely after a certain age im sure me and the wife "gettin comfortable" will come much less often and chess will be there waiting for me...oh wait, i enjoy smoking more than chess and drinking a good cup of coffee...however mix the three together after gettin comfy with the wife and thats heaven
