Honestly, how much does it bother you to lose?

How much does it bother you to lose a game, and for how long, typically?

I believe there must be some amount of disappointment at losing - an emotional factor at some level for some quantifiable amount of time, if for no other reason than we are losing an investment, however small it is, and we are human. Unless we are like the proverbial Zen masters we have attachments.  And how do you actually react?  Do you ever swear, act out, sulk, or are you completely oblivious without ever being fazed even momentarily?

Losing happens, I can't say I'm anyhow sad or frustrated after I got beaten, except when I was winning or at least equal in a position and a huge blunder ruined it all for me. But even then I'm aware that the other guy is happy over his victory, and the loss doesn't appear as bad anymore.

It's just a pity that I wasted precious minutes in a game which I was already destined to lose, and that's the only thing which can't be redeemed. There's always a sucker with too much points around the corner, but time is finite. Sealed

I HATE to lose!

Sports coaches have long recognised this truth:

Everybody loves to win, but the champions are the ones who hate to lose the most.

Kageri

I have no problems with losing, but I'm very annoyed by the stupid mistakes I made. Those mistakes can hound me for days.

UltraLaser

I almost always get annoyed after losing an otb game, especially when it is against a lower rated player or a rival. Sometimes I get annoyed even if I draw a game in similar circumstances. But I get over it pretty quickly.

What an absurd statement.  How does one quantify the amount somebody hates to lose?

Sheesh.

AlCzervik

It only bothers me when I lose to bigpoison.

Sheesh.

Some people shrug off a loss and aren't terribly affected, while others are for a while devastated by a loss and are incapable of doing much of anything for a while. Do you not think it's reasonable to conclude the second type of person hates losing more than the first person?

bigpoison

No.  The second person is just more childish.

pdve

it only bothers me to lose against a computer or against someone using computer assistance without being caught. i think that has happened to me a couple of times and i hate it.

losing normally to a human doesn't bother me so much. there are times when i have hit my head against a wall but only when i am clearly winning and blunder and lose the game. generally, the result of a game is not a factor. i am there to play and learn and grow as a chess player.

wonderboycurt

I've been known to throw quite a temper tantrum. It certainly doesn't help if I've been drinking either... And whenever I'm drinking I seem to lose... I don't think I should drink and play chess ever again.

Thank you.

Bobby Bowden, Vince Lombardi, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert and others have said pretty much the same thing. I was actually paraphrasing Bowden in that statement.

Connors was perhaps the most direct: "I hate to lose more than I love to win."

duck_and_cover

sometimes after losing I'm amused by my own inaptitude.

TMHgn

Nobody loves losing.

However, it is part of the game. You have to accept it and deal with it constructively. Normally only oneself is to blame for the loss. And if the other guy just played better, well, that deserves respect. So get over it, learn and be better next time.

bigpoison

Not surprised, Fez'.  Connors was well known for his childish behavior.  I doubt he hated losing any more than any other tennis player.

I get pissed for about 2 min than move on... what helps me is just to go and get into different activity.

chasm1995

At my level, I expect to loose more than I win, so it's not bothersome to me.

I hate losing vs players with lower rating. It's just like a slap in the face. It's like you have a degree and can't solve high school math problem. Feel somewhat useless.

Against equal or better rating, I don't really mind. I say to myself it's 50-50 vs equal rating, and 30-70 vs better rating. It's like having a degree and given doctoral thesis problem. It's too hard.

The same is true when I win.

Vs lower rating, no satisfaction. I should be able to beat them. It will be so stupid if I lose.

Vs equal rating, it's 50-50.

Vs higher rating. High satisfaction. Boy, I am good, I can beat this high rated guy. My chess could have been improving a lot. Or, well, they are not so good. They just lucky to get this high rating. I am not so lucky as them. So, i am an underrated, they are overated. Just luck plays some tricks among us that my rating is not as high as them.

I usually start raging as soon as I see my opponent taking me for a fool, then I blow up when he's inevitably proven right.

The problem is that winning makes me want to stop playing, and losing compels me to play more. I think I have problems.
