It used to be that when someone clicked on the "X", it would replace the post with "[COMMENT DELETED]".
For moderators, if the post was already "[COMMENT DELETED]", the post would be deleted altogether, whereas nothing would happen if you weren't a moderator. So to delete a post, the moderators would have to click on the "X" twice - once to change it to "[COMMENT DELETED]" and again to actually delete it.
This has changed recently so that when a moderator clicks on the "X", the post is deleted immediately - so 1 click instead of 2. So I wouldn't be surprised if the "X" button has been removed for non-moderators, in which case people would have to edit their posts and put their own "[COMMENT DELETED]" or whatever else text they'd like to substitute their original text with - it makes sense to me, because non-moderators have never been able to actually delete the post altogether.

Oh, ok, that makes sense.
I'm still able to see and click the grey X, and clicking it gives a prompt "are you sure you want to delete this comment" and clicking yes reloads the page with a notification "comment has been deleted."
But I guess they'll eventually remove that button for us.
I think it has been fixed.
