Clearly something is bothering Hou Yifan. I suspect this protest was largely motivated by her rejection of the current woman's WCC format.

I distrust any assertion starting with "No doubt". If the pairings are supposed to be determined by a computer algorithm, then it should be pretty easy to falsify them... if they are indeed contrived. The round-by-round results are not secret, after all.

I don't agree that Hou Yifan just made a mistake.
There is no way I would play 1g4 and 2 f3. Even if you don't know the fools mate, 2f3 is just stupid on general grounds.
That is to me. Hou is rated around 1100 or 1200 points higher.

It's done nonetheless. Not just in this tournament. For most women is okay, or at least they don't complain. But for Hou Yifan it becomes a problem, as she was playing Pia Cramling one day, and Michael Adams the other, making it harder to keep the same level of play as the challenge is too different.

Of course the first few rounds all the strong GMs are playing non GMs. Caruana played a 2300 in round 3 then a 2600 in round 4.
See, I'm not saying Hou Yifan was right. I actually wrote the opposite, as when the rules and abuses favor her she says nothing.
But, having some international swiss tournaments experience, teaches you some "suspicious" pairings do happen. Which doesn't mean the accusations are true, but –in this case– it was odd to have 7 women pairings out of 9 rounds.
She complained, and we just don't know how officials replied to her complaint. But we may develop an idea based on her reaction today.
Thus, from experience, better not to judge as we don't have all the facts and, also, it's pointless. People asked why, and I just draw a picture explaining it. That's all.

I also agree that we don't know how the officials reacted, or what she saw and heard during the tournament to make her believe there was something dishonest going on.
