Houdini not fast enough on quad core

I have a quad core laptop that runs at 2.5 ghz. Seems it is not enough for houdini. What type of processor is more suited for houdini?

Not fast enough??

Why, ManintheMiddleAttack? Your Houdini loses on time in 1/0 games?

Houdini lags on my quad core laptop. Which processor would be more suitable?

PortugalTheMan

64 core 256 GB

It's probably trying to use all available threads, and there's no CPU power left for any other PC apps or processes. Try going into the engine configuration and reducing the number of threads that the engine uses.

P.S. And stop with all the troll threads, or else! Tongue Out

Thanks for the info, but it shouldn't be slow.

I don't know what you mean by "slow". Is it bogging down the computer, or is it not producing the nodes/sec that you're expecting? (Btw, NPS isn't something I'd pay a lot of attention to.)

I think he means the depth isn't getting up to a certain level fast enough

Okay.

Quad core should be more than enough. But, houdini is still slow.

What exactly are you looking for?

Describe the lag?

isnt Houdini rated 3350+?  I mean how much, and how fast are you looking for?

I have a quad core phone that runs at 2.26 GHz. Although it's ARM.

Notice something?! Quad core at 2.5 GHz doesn't mean anything!

Heck, we could be talking about a 7 year old Phenom X4 here. Ready for the bin...

I have spoken at length with someone who has used Houdini 4-64 bit version on his 8 core machine, setting it use 5 of threads and leave 3 for the PC, and he still complains it is slow. He prefers Stockfish DD 64 bit version.

If you are looking for fast analysis that looks past the first 22-24 plies, with any engine, you pretty much need a server. Past that ply depth, the time required to do each successive ply depth is so great that it nearly doubles the analysis time. The more cores that you can spread the work load across, the faster the analysis will go.

Houdini 4 can only utilize 8 cores, where as Stockfish DD can utilize 64 cores.

                                             Good Luck

(PS edit)

With most cpu's, the number of cores is the same as the number of threads it can deal with in total. The aforementioned number includes those required to use the pc itself, apart from the engine. Some cpu's can have the capability of two threads per core.

I doubt you are a programmer, based on the fact you had to ask your question. If you know a programmer or IT pro willing to help you, you may be able to get them to help you set up a video card, that may have hundreds or thousands of GPU cores that, can be made to analyze the data in place of CPU cores. This requires knowledge of how to change the existing programs to accomodate CUDA processing.

If you give me a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish, I may be able to give you some tips. PM me though...
