How am I not getting better

I keep on reading books about Chess, like My System, I've analyzed my own games before not with the computer, but I just don't know why I'm never doing what I say I should in my games? Anyone experience the same problem? If so, how'd you fix it?

One can get some idea of the lasting scope of the respect for My System by looking at:
https://www.chess.com/article/view/the-best-chess-books-ever
Still, it might be noted that My System apparently did not occur to GM Yasser Seirawan as something to include in his list of personal favorites, and Aaron Nimzowitsch was not identified by the GM as a very worthy author.

https://www.chess.com/blog/GMYAZ/open-letter-response-user-radovics-letter-to-me

My System has accumulated some direct negative commentary over the years.
"... I found [the books of Aaron Nimzowitsch to be] very difficult to read or understand. ... [Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal by Raymond Keene explains his] thinking and influence on the modern game in a far more lucid and accessible way. ... The books that are most highly thought of are not necessarily the most useful. Go with those that you find to be readable; ..." - GM Nigel Davies (2010)
In 2016, IM pfren wrote:
"My System is an iconoclastic book. A lot of things in there is sheer provocation, and it does need an expereienced player to know what exactly must be taken at its face value.
I love 'My System', and I have read it cover to cover one dozen times, but suggesting it to a class player is an entirely different matter."
Also: "[Some things] ARE wrong, and it's not easy for a non-advanced player to discover those wrong claims.
Nigel Short has claimed that 'My System' should be banned. Stratos Grivas says that the book is very bad. I don't share their opinion, but I am pretty sure that there are more useful reads for class players out there."
Although he is a fan of My System, IM John Watson similarly acknowledged (2013) that:
"... Not everything in it has stood the test of time, ..."
http://theweekinchess.com/john-watson-reviews/john-watson-book-review-108-of-eplus-books-part-2-nimzowitsch-classics
One last point to keep in mind is that, even if My System would eventually help a player, it might not necessarily be helpful to a player now.
"... Just because a book contains lots of information that you don’t know, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be extremely helpful in making you better at this point in your chess development. ..." - Dan Heisman (2001)

"... In order to maximize the benefits of [theory and practice], these two should be approached in a balanced manner. ... Play as many slow games (60 5 or preferably slower) as possible, ... The other side of improvement is theory. ... This can be reading books, taking lessons, watching videos, doing problems on software, etc. ..." - NM Dan Heisman (2002)

"... If it’s instruction, you look for an author that addresses players at your level (buying something that’s too advanced won’t help you at all). This means that a classic book that is revered by many people might not be useful for you. ..." - IM Jeremy Silman (2015)

A few questions:

1. When you say "Read" chess books, what exactly do you mean?

2. Are you trying to read multiple books at once?

3. Are you having someone stronger go over your games?

I would say the difference between these 2 games, shows some good progress.

I usually read them, while also trying to play out the moves that are being instructed, usually on a board. I can't really visualize them in my head yet. I do not want to read multiple at once, I usually read novels for pleasure, but also halt them just to read the chess books. I however, am guilty of having someone stronger going over my games. I usually play with one kid whom I believe to be a little stronger, but never analyze games with him.

thats really not fair that this is being done to you. everybody else puts in time, and they get points in return. you put in time, you get nothing. not fair. i know how you feel: should you put in even more time and keep getting disappointed, or will you start advancing in rating soon and eventually hit master levels? tough one. id say, decide on number of hours (or games) you will play, and if no movement in rating happens, then gods are against you and you should try something else. maybe you're meant to be a soccer prodigy or something.

My System is a bit above your playing level, to be honest. I'd save that book for when you're around 1600-1800.

Plus, it's a book that's primarily aimed at improving one's positional play, which, judging by the games of yours I've seen, isn't your problem. Your primary struggle seems to be: Tactics. All the losses of yours that I've seen have come from tactical oversights.

That's where I'd spend my time training, if I were you. Since you like books, aim your focus on books that relate specifically to TACTICS.

A former sparring partner of mine rose from 1400 to 1800 after doing nothing but tactical puzzles for a solid year. Improving your tactical vision will have a significant impact on your game.

Thank you for this. I really need to understand some more fundamentals clearly. It's just different to hear from someone else than myself, so I appreciate your input heavily.
