Hello! I am currently 1943 rapid rated but I'm 1690 rated in blitz. I really struggle with speeding up my calculations and if you look at my blitz game you'll see just god-awful moves that I would never play in a rapid time control. However when I do spend time to think about my moves I am getting consistently flagged despite my oftentimes winning position. Do any high rated blitz players have any tips for me to improve my quick calculation? It's pretty frustrating that my blitz rating is so low and I feel stuck.

I am currently on the blitz grind I was 1587 like 2-3 days ago now I am 1775. (I had recovered from a tilt) In blitz I try to move decently fast and only think around 2-3 moves ahead unless I am focusing on like a tactic that may occur which sometimes makes me blind to other threats or I am trying to see if my opponent has a few good options and how I can neutralize them. Most of the time just making a move that's "fine" might just be all you need to make it by and survive. Not blundering is probably the most important thing at these lower levels which is obvious but it's easier said than done.

I used to be in a similar situation to you, switched to having blitz as my main time control and played it consistently while at the same time trying to improve.

If you look at my graph you can see that it worked pretty well

I’m bad at blitz, checkmate is rare to find all the time even in daily

Yes, that's blitz in a nutshell.

The trick is to find a happy middleroad where you can trust yourself to make "good enough" moves to play on, without worrying about whether or not they're "best".

It's all about shallow calculations - 1 to 2 moves deep. Will this short sequence improve my position? Will it make life easier, or harder, for my opponent?

Is it better to simplify here and clarify the position, or should I muddy the waters and introduce more tension, instead?

Should I move this pawn to gain a tempo in the short term, or will I regret having moved it, later on?

You have to ask yourself questions like these (whichever ones apply in the current moment), then answer them quickly, and not fret about whether or not your decision was correct ... because once the decision is made, it's time to move on from there, as the next question will arise very soon.

Other than that, the main process is just to play, play, play, analyze, analyze, analyze ... Build your skill through experience, trial and error, and review.

I've gradually decreased the gap between my rapid and blitz by simply playing more
