how bad am I?

I'm 35. So I learned the basics from my mom. About 8 years ago I picked it back up and started studying tactics and openings. I never entered any tournaments and I think that Chessmaster was too tough and discouraged me. That darn Josh Waitkins was tough as a 12 year old.

So I just started again last week and I'm 900 blitz and 1000 standard. Is this rating pretty normal for a casual player?

You're better than people who are pitifully bad.  1000 standard is a good starting point to build off of.

So what if he was twelve years old? The kid was born with a huge talent and worked his butt off. Most of us are not born gifted and most of us are lazy.

Being stuck 8 years in a deep... I dont even know how it's possible, even 1 year is more than enough to gain up some handreds of ratings to 1600.

1 Year, hell tons of hours to study, read some books in toilet, before sleep, in metro, solve tactics, holy... !

I had Chessmaster 9000 at one time. I obviously didnt play enough of it. haha

Dont let the ratings on this site fool you. It's way easier to cheat online, and you can have as many accounts as you like, online. For that reason, your rating OTB could be dramatically different than it is here.

A 1200 OTB rating puts you in the upper half of the class for sure. Everyone seems to think that 1800 is common. It's not. Here, 1800 means you're top 100 in the state! I believe the highest rated player in the state is 2200.

You see a lot of 1600-2200's here, but that's because the internet is so big. Dont be discouraged by a low rating. I'm here to learn blitz. All you need is time and a plan. Dont let your rating be your "measuring stick".

Good luck!

I just looked it up... the #100 player in the state is 1164!
The lowest 1800 is #35 with a rating of 1806!

Just don't play blitz. You'll improve.

The best chess coach is yourself.

Play a game with a standard time control. After you finished the game, analyze it, preferable a game in which you lost. You don't lose if you only play accurate moves. Did you hang a piece? Missed a checkmate?

Even if you analyze it with an engine, it is still better than not analyzing. But at least spend the same amount to analyzing the game as you did with playing the game.

You will not improve until you fix what you do wrong. And you don't know what you do wrong if you don't analyze your games.

Even if your rating were a real life one I'd say pretty bad.  Don't be discouraged, since if you assimilate the basics your skill and understanding will skyrocket.  Here are a couple of test positions for you to practice:

I learned to play Chess late in life (age 31) on a Apple IIGS using the program (Chessmaster 2100) back in 1988. I now use an iMac, iPad, and my iPhone 6 plus, to play Chess on. Just keep playing and you'll improve as time goes on. Most important of all, don't be discouraged...🐾
