Hmm. Well you are in India. Are there any chess clubs near where you live? Have you played any over the board games?

Don’t get discouraged! Many great chess players have started from a later age! To make up for the lost time you have to put in a lot more effort (and need a fair amount of natural intelligence, that is good pattern recognition) but it’s very possible! If you dedicate yourself to training the right way you can become an IM oof even a GM one day for sure!

The great players who started late (like Botvinnik or Portisch) started at age 12, not 18. By the time you are 18, you pretty much have to be a master.

Also, no one can "put in a lot more effort" than these kids. How could anyone do that? They play chess and study chess (with master coaches) all day, every day.

I met a 50-year-old Russian guy who learned to play at that age and reached a good level, 2000 FIDE in just a year

I started playing less than a year ago, in classical OTB tournaments I’ve beaten some of these kids who train with masters and have been playing since they were 3, difference in training is that I enjoy it more and want to do it, most of these kids are pressured and forced by their parents.

Basically. And at 1700 no one is making a “career” out of the game - not even by coaching. Master is attainable, of course, but that is no career and takes a lot of investment as well.

Playing chess? Probably not likely since only the top players make much money.

Teaching or a field where you could work for a chess company is more possible
