Not just the best – abolutely necessary. But you need either a computer or a stronger player to check your analysis, or you may be holding on to misconceptions.

Do you ever get to play OTB? (over the board)  -If so, have a tiny notepad with you, and write down the moves. Set up the board at home and replay them, and think of stronger moves you might have made. If you lost, try to find the critical point where you got behind, then find out why, and how you could have prevented that from happening. A computer is handy, but not at all necessary. Actually, I much prefer a book, and going over positions on a chessboard with a cup of coffee nearby.

Chess books, a chess set, analyze your games as well as grandmaster games and play a lot of OTB. That's how it was done before computers Laughing

A computer is just an asset. Before computers there were masters. Based on this fact yes, you can definitely be a strong chess player without computer. Its up to you.

try snail mail/correspondance chess... failing that your local library maybe? or take a chess set to your local cafe/coffee shop?!all the best

Books and magazines can give you the information you need. Higher rated players can help you with checking analysis. Join a local club and play OTB games as often as you can. Study your own games for mistakes.

I would think you could get a six+ year-old computer for what it costs you to rent a newer one.  And that would be plenty good enough for chess.
