You do not gain the advantage by attacking... not unless your opponent messes up badly.
You gain the advantage by maneuver, and then cash it in by attacking.
Attack is just a way of converting one form of advantage... superior development and center control, for example... into some other, more immediately useful form such as mate or winning a piece.
