how can he get his parents to let him play chess again?

ask them lmao you can’t really do anything else

chessterchief

I put a lot of suggestions in comment #32. there's plenty of things to do to make asking easer, but yes, it does boil down to asking in the end. but which do you think will work better?

"can I play chess again?

or "I am sorry for disobeying, I realize I may have been playing chess too much, can I play from 4:00-5:00?"

YOu should not let them do that, whip them with telephone cable show them you are the boss, YOU ARE THE KING of that HOUSE NOW i JEBKO DECLARE IT , GO NOW take your telephone calbe and whip them

And this is a kid with no parenting.

Looks like the mods took over the parenting. Account closed for abuse.

Although their comments and topics disappear their votes and emoji reactions to comments stay. Developers must have missed something.  Not to worry, more free flairs!

*Snip* but if his dream is to become a chess player why should he be discouraged by a bunch of randoms on a forum. He should continue to pursue his dream. *Snip*

He did seek advice in the forums. Whatever the responses may be, whether he gets discouraged is up to him.

You feel he should continue to pursue his passion despite him not showing any particular affinity for the game (by his ratings) and not having a specially tailored nurturing environment like lazlo provided.  I'd advice him to try many different things to see where else his passions and talents may lie.  He's only 12 and not anyone and everyone is a prodigy.

Yeah, I don't know if I really want Chess to be my career, I'm also thinking about being a Marine Biologist when I'm older, I just don't know. My rating is roughly in the 1600s on Lichess, but I haven't touched the game in a couple weeks, I just watch GM's play sometimes.

chessterchief

hey, me too! what do you want to do as a marine biologist?

that's why it's best to explore as much as you can when you're young and not to overcommit to just one thing.

quit it, @miskit_mistake. ether you don't have experience with that, or you do, 30 something and making obnoxious comments on a chess site.

Obnoxious? You’re just sensitive. The kid hasn’t touched chess for 3 weeks, yet here he is saying that he plans to make chess a career. Is it wrong to say that he won’t get very far, and that chess isn’t a viable career option to most people?

quit what? it was a conversation between op & myself and you just stepped in with unnecessary insults.  i don't think you really know what obnoxious means.

chessterchief

k, that is pretty funny.

your parents provide you with FREE everything!  they love you but you must understand that they are responsible for preparing you for living without their help!

be grateful for their support!  respect their boundaries & rules, as they are designed for your guidance & protection!

chess tournaments are expensive!  it will cost multiple thousands of dollars in entry fees, lodging, gas & food to POSSIBLY acquire a probably worthless title!  who will pay for all of this?  to what purpose?

if you are serious about chess then keep it as your life hobby:  but trying to somehow make it your main source of income will almost certainly lead you to utter ruin!

i would just like to add onto this; i am 14 right now and i have focused most of my free time to chess, but i am not putting all my eggs in one basket. I focus on school, and i'm trying to find a career that i will enjoy. I am planning on coaching in the future when i am out of school.
