ive started playing very recently and pretty much suck, one of my friends suggested that i should playing 3 minute games, i complied but after playing 5ish 10 minute games i lost each one of them and seem to be falling towards 100, is there any way i can improve?

Hi soosy,

If you meant your friend said you shouldn’t play 3 minute games then I agree with them.

You’ve complied with your friend’s suggestion and switched to 10 minutes but you haven’t switched the amount of time you are using and the amount of thought you are putting into each move.

In your last 3 games you ended the match with only using 30 seconds, this resulted in some brutal blunders. Try slowing down and doing some more calculating.

After you lose you should take a look at the game and see what happened. This would hopefully lead you to the same conclusion as I wrote above. It’s ok to make mistakes but you need to learn from them to improve.

For instance in your game against Anektt the game swings in your favour on move 6 when your opponent takes your pawn on f4 with his Queen. Go take a look and see if you can come up with a better response than moving your Queen.

Something like

will help you a lot

In your game against verypogindividual he basically gets a scholars mate on you by targeting your f7 square with both his Queen and bishop. This will be a very common early checkmate attack used against you until you get to higher ratings.

So by looking at that game you can improve by looking up how to refute scholars mate and or making sure you are careful about queens and bishops trying to target that pawn square in the future.

I am on my phone so don’t know if I can link games.

You should also google some videos about chess fundamentals. Applying these fundamentals and putting more thought into each move will surely raise your rating.

Good luck and don’t give up!

"playing 3 minute games" ++ Do not do that. Play 15|10 rapid. Whenever you lose a game stop playing and analyse it thoroughly so as to learn from your mistakes.

thank you, ive been watching a lot of videos and reading whatever i can find about fundamentals but my main problem is that my opponents are simply way too good compared to my skill level(even at 100)

Hello World!

soosybaka678

does anyone know about a more beginner friendly platform as almost everyone in my range seems to be much, much better than i am

Deadmanparty

As you lose your rating will drop.  Eventually you will find an equal.  Just play 10 min games min, maybe longer.

Start solving tactics puzzles, for example using this website:

Once you get good at tactics and stop hanging pieces, you should easily get to a 1000+ rating

thanks but even at ratings as low as these, almost everyone seems to know everything and though ive been checking out stuff about tactics and openings more recently i still havent learned how to counter traps like the scholar's mate is there a list of these common traps and tactics that i can find somewhere?

There is a way you can improve. Examine multiple openings so you can get an advantage. Then, play against the coaches. They will give you helpful tips and as long as you listen to these tips you will improve your game play. Also, never sacrifice your queen unless it is to capture another queen. Don't play 3 minute games. Play 10 minute games instead. This will give you more time to think and plan out a good strategy.

It's not enough to "check out" tactics, you should actually solve tactics puzzles until they become second nature, and you'll be able to win games by tactical blows against your opponents (which is how I win 99% of my games when my opponent doesn't simply blunder pieces).

The scholars' mate involves the opponent getting out his queen very early in the game, which is generally not recommended, the correct play once he does that is simply to defend the attacked pawn with Nc6, and then if the opponent attacks f7 again with the bishop, you simply play g6, and you're completely safe.

Opening theory is useless for anyone below the 2000 or 1800 rating, you can beat most players below these ratings by a sound understanding of the general principles, a cogent plan to attack, and not missing tactical blows when they're available

i actually meant analyzing by "checking them out" thanks for telling me about the counter, i figured the best thing to do now is to forfeit pretty much every time i fall for a trap i went on a losing spree of around 8-ish games within a span of 5 minutes but i suppose i'll be able to find my real rating quicker

and how focus-based is chess? because if its largely dependent on how good you're at focusing, then that clears up most of the things

schugzwang

Focusing is everything in chess, it's extremely important. If you lose focus and hang a piece it's game over, chess games aren't reversible (unless you opponent isn't focusing either and starts hanging pieces too). All the tips like working on tactics and understanding the general principles are useless if you don't focus hard on the game.
