This is en passant.  If a pawn moves 2 squares, where moving one square would have left it possible for an opposing pawn to take it, then on the next turn, that pawn can take it as if it had only moved one square.

It seems lots of people slack on their reading since en passant is asked about all the time.

It takes all sorts to make the world, efour!

Maybe Mike did read it, but just like me was just a little confuzzled (confused + puzzled) by the rules.

I didn’t quite follow through on the en passant thingee when I was taught Chess at age 10.

yeah, i wasnt taught about it when i was taught how the pieces move either.  It's kinda silly since it's an important rule, that should be taught along with pawns being able to move two squares on their first move.  I only found out about it when i joined a club and someone used it.  It comes as quite a shock because obviously you are sure you know all the rules, because why would you be taught all the other moves and not this one.  (the answer is usually that the first person who teaches you how the pieces move doesnt know anything about chess really).  I would imagine more people are sure that pawns cant capture like that, than know that they can.

Probably true but I just felt like someone ought to complain about it. Laughing

Plain and simple En Passant, Passed Pawn, you moved two squares passed one of his pawns that had already moved three squares hence forth as a rule of chess (don't ask me why) he has a chance to take you. Not many people seem to catch on to this quickly as I have played a guy who didn't know what it was and he used it on me so I explained it to him.

If I, playing as white, pass on en passant, can black do it on their next move?  I think the answer is no, but I'm not sure
