How come I'm much worse at Blitz? (Another Blitz vs Rapid Thread)

I'm new to chess. I've been playing for 1 year but worked my way up to 1k rapid playing mostly 10-minute games. I started playing 5-minute blitz and getting beat left and right by 500s meh I understand that I still suck, but I don't know wtf is going on. Most of my opponents have worse rapid scores than I do too. Anyway, who else feels this and what do you think are the reasons?

Good insight. I feel the same way. Thanks

Most people's blitz scores are lower than their rapid. I'm 1300 rapid and struggling to stay in 4 digits in blitz. Just don't go on tilt and neglect rapid for blitz for weeks at a time. That happened to me earlier this year and my rapid rating suffered because of it.

But you asked why. It comes down to less time to calculate and time pressure. You are relying on your pattern recognition, which most people can only build up slowly over time in rapid and longer time controls.

Thanks. The difference feels so significant though. 500s having 85-90% accuracy games in 5 minute games.
